Breathing Problems? - 11-25-2007, 01:41 AM

Hi, I just brought Waeryn home and she is asleep next to me right now. She seems to be breathing hard and fast. When I put my hand on her back it feels like she's panting, but she's completely asleep and her mouth is closed. Does anyone know what, if anything, is wrong? If she keeps doing this when she's asleep, does it sound like she needs a vet?
-Whitney

Whitney, I have sent you a private message. I am not equipped to answer your question so I have sent you another source for answers.
the panting is probably nothing to worry about but let us know what you find out.

Congratulations Whitney on getting your new pup home! The fast breathing is probably normal (though like Jane said, we can't make a medical diagnosis) and should have slowed down when Waeryn fell into a deeper sleep state.

Thanks for responding. Her breathing did slow down after a while and this morning it seems normal, or close too it. Maybe she was excied since it was her first night home. I'm going to keep a close eye on her and I'll also check out that other website. Thanks again guys.

I've had my puppy for a week or so now and sometimes he seems to breath normally, and other times he pants even when it is not hot. Sometimes when he is asleep his breathing seems fast and shallow. I was worried that it was a medical problem, possibly a symptom of heartworm, but when we took him to the vet after a nasty spell of tapeworms (which I'll be writing a post about later) this week, we mentioned it and she didn't seem concerned about it.

I talked to the breeder about it and she said that Waeryn was used to sleeping out in her kennel and might not be used to the temperature inside my apartment. The pups in the kennel had a heating lamp but they slept as far away from it as they could get.

Occasional lengthy periods of 'panting' (breathing a little faster than normal) is normal. especially in a puppy.
