Problems post-neutering -
02-01-2008, 11:20 PM
Ein was just neutered yesterday and I picked him up after work today. He was fine it seemed--obviously quite excited to see us and we tried to keep him calm to keep him from stressing himself and damaging his stitches after surgery, but there was still something off about him. He wasn't listening AT ALL to any of our simplest commands (all of them, of course, in relation to getting him to take it easy and stop chasing after whatever caught his fancy cuz he was just all over the place). We got him home and he was hyperactive, tearing into all of his toys like crazy. He got sleepy after we fed him and gave him his pain meds so we went out to grab a bite to eat.
When we got home, he had peed his crate (mind you, he had peed and pood 4 times in the hour after he had gotten home from the vet, which seemed a bit excessive, but we figured it might still be normal post-surgery and a night in a kennel). We washed him up and shortly after he peed in the kitchen again, this time it was tinted red with blood. We thought maybe it was just leakage from his stitches, but we checked the site and it appeared fine and undamaged despite all his hyperness. We got him to calm down and nap in the crate again for a couple more hours, then we took him outside and when he peed it was pretty much just blood. I don't know if it appeared that way cuz it was dark out and he peed on fresh snow and so maybe I'm overreacting cuz this is my first puppy, but nothing about that seems right and I don't have an emergency number for my vet so I don't know if this is normal or not??? Help!

Sorry to hear that you are worried about Ein. I would call the vet first thing this morning as I don't think blood in the urine is normal or excessive urinating. I had my two neutered and they both came home sleepy and were quiet most of that evening and next day. Good luck and keep us posted.

Duncan was sleepy the first day from surgery, the blood in the urine, I would be calling the vet ASAP with the symptoms. Duncan is my first male dog, but that doesn't sound normal.

Have you checked in with the vet today? With all the fosters I have had neutered, never had anything like this and would say it definitely isn't normal.

Yep, we got into the vet right away today. We'll have the urinalysis results on Monday, but in the meantime the vet gave us an antibiotic to give Ein twice a day. The vet said it is most likely a bladder infection as a result of stress over the surgery? I can see the stress part because, as I said, Ein hasn't been the least bit calm since we got him home, but I'm not quite understanding how that leads to a bladder infection.
Also, my fiance pointed out as we were leaving the vet's office that there were other bloody urine spots in the snow outside the office that weren't from Ein. Don't know if that means anything, but that kind of irked me nonetheless.
Depending on the UA results, I may take Ein to another vet for a second opinion. I can't find anything online linking stress and bladder infections.

I would definitly change vets. The fact that they sent you home without an emergency number is a good enough reason. My vet sent me home with several different numbers and the reason why they would recommend one number over the other.
reason number 2:"With all the fosters I have had neutered, never had anything like this and would say it definitely isn't normal." <<per Debbie

I wouldn't be too concerned about the bloody spots in the snow. Dogs bleed for verious reasons, it is a vet hospital after all. People pick up their dogs take them out and the dog go potty. Maybe some of those spots were dripped from a dog coming into the clinic with a cut.
If you were worried about them you should have asked the recpitionist.

Is Ein doing better after a couple days of antibiotics? I'm hoping for him to be feeling much better now. Keep us posted!

Hey all,
Sorry I never kept you updated on Ein, especially after all your support and helpfulness. School eats up a lot of my free time...and Ein eats up the rest! LOL
Anyways, he started clearing up almost immediately once we started him on the antibiotics and everything in general healed up very nicely. He's happy and healthy and all is well.
