Colby and Cammie are still sick!! - 02-04-2008, 07:18 PM

Well the long and short of the story is that Cammie "came complete with coccidia" which we did not know about and we treated her 4 ten+ days per the vet and treated Colby as a "preventative" measure...well today, both had samples tested and now they BOTH still have it....vet wants to treat with another round of meds...Colby was sick today, both ends and he is just feeing rotten....my poor baby!!! and poor cammie-girl....shes a bit spunky today but shes still sick....anyone have any suggestions other than trying a bland diet too, which the vet reccomended in addition to the additional round of meds....?????

my poor puppies!!!

Oh no Julie! I'm sorry to hear that. Other than the vet meds and bland diet, I wouldn't know anything else to do. Kaopectate (the over the counter human version) stopped Charlie's minor bouts of diarrhea. If your vet didn't give you anything for that, he would probably approve that (or Immodium ID) over the phone. Have you talked to Cammie's breeder? She might have a few suggestions...I guess the entire litter would have coccidia too?

Give them their meds, tuck them in their comfy soft beds, and pour yourself a double marguerita! We'll all be here for support, hoping your pups feel much better soon.

Pretty much just keep to the bland diet and another round of meds. Sometimes it takes a while and a couple of courses to get it knocked out.

As I understand it, the coccidia is fairly common in the warmer climates of the Southern US and Colby even had girardia when we first got him and he came from Maine. I am understanding about the fact that they have it, i just wish it would go away quickly as they are miserable!!! and the clean-up in lousy too....i just feel so bad every time i see them "try to go" and what comes out is "just not healthy".....poor babies....and im sick with a rotten cold on top of them so maybe mumma needs a sick day?? others stay home when their kids are sick so why not me....my studnts will survive one day without me, right??? i used to think they wouldnt but i have learned that they dont usually have any sympathy for me when i am sick, at least pas years classes havent, so i might as well stay home as later in the week is really not a good time to and we have a DOE site visit nex week on which i will serve on the teacher panel so i cant be out then...so i think we will all rest at home today.....love how i just convinced myself of that one!!!

Try to enjoy your day off, even though you're all a bit under the weather. The kids will have fun playing "mind games" with the subsitute teacher for a day. Hope you all feel better soon!

Ask your vet first but if they are taking anything such as an antibiotic, they need to get the gut flora rebuilt. Yogurt is a good thing to add-plain, unflavored, fully leaded(ie not low fat). Also there are several probiotics that you can use-go to the equine aisle in the feed store and look for stuff like Probios or similar items that have lactobacilious(I know I spelled that wrong) and other types of benefical bacteria. It will be in a super large syringe type dispenser or look like on of those tubes that you use to worm horses. It will help them get better faster. Again--ask your vet first if it's okay to add to the diet.

Just think of it like a person taking antibiotics or those types of meds and what it does to your system. Actually Eddie gets a probiotic every day, the rest of the crew gets yogurt at least 2xs a week. Then again, my ducks are now laying like crazy so the dogs also get fresh duck eggs every other day. Yes three ducks are laying that many eggs!

*~* I am sorry to hear that your Corgi cuties are sick. Having one sick is bad but, having both sick is VERY bad.

I am praying for all of you to get better quickly.

Hopefully lots of hugs and kisses with help with the symptoms...along with the meds.

* Are they drinking plenty of water ?
I hope the meds are not making them dehydrated !

Colby doesn't appear to be his chipper self.

When Byron was a pup he did have issues. We finally got the Vet to recommend Immodium ID. That cleared the condition.

But still you need to get to the core of the problem

Hope all are better soon!!!
