Vomiting - 02-19-2008, 06:48 PM

About three hours after breakfast today Charlie vomited up his food. That's a first. He didn't seem to have any heaves. He was lying in the recliner and then "blahp", out came breakfast. He immediately seemed interested in eating it again (gross) so I moved him so I could clean it up.

Shortly afterward, I gave him about a half cup of kibble which he ate and kept down and another half cup about two hours ago which he has kept down. He's drinking a normal amount of water. He hasn't had any treats today. He has chewed on grass and sticks, which is an everyday thing with him. No change in our schedule or routine. Nothing really out of the ordinary I can think of.

He has not had his evening poop which would normally be about an hour from now. I'm not sure if he will have one this evening since his food came up, but I would like to see a healthy stool so I don't worry so much.

He seems bright eyed, happy, playful, everything just like normal, so I'm not sure if this is anything I should be concerned about or if it was just a "one off". Has anyone else ever had anything like this?

Maybe he ate something outside that didn't set well on his stomach or he may have eaten too fast. I wouldn't worry as long as he is back to his happy little self.

I don't worry too much when a dog throws up once. IF they are acting ok otherwise, as he seems to be.

And yes, I've had many dogs do this. I keep an eye on them for that day. (Could be the grass he ate that made him sick. And sometimes dogs will eat grass when they feel off, to help them toss up whatever is making them queasy.)

I think it would be ok to just watch him. If he throws up again or has abnormal bowel movements, or quits drinking then call your vet.

Thanks for your replies. Charlie ate this morning and pooped a couple hours later than his normal schedule, but no vomiting and his stool looks healthy. So I don't know what upset his tummy yesterday. Everyday he rips a lot of grass up by the roots, but seems to chew it and then spit it out and "crunch" up sticks and spit the pieces out. Maybe he did swallow some yesterday. I don't know. He's never vomited before yesterday. Anyway we appear to be back to normal today and hopefully won't have any more incidents.

That is excellent news. It is always scary when you think they are sick.

Nick has had this same thing happen to him and when it happened he threw up for two mornings in a row. My wife and i freaked out and we took him to the vet that evening. The vet recommended fasting him for 24 hours and giving him a little pepcid ac with his first meal after breaking the fast. of course he was fine and the culprit ended up being chewed up sticks which he ingested. Since then we watch him like a hawk and if he gets a little too focused on a stick we take it from him.

I am glad to hear that Charlie seems to be better. He is a great looking puppy.

I was up at 4am with my Rat Terrier, Daisy, vomiting. Luckily I have some medicing called gastricalm from my vet. They prescribed it to Lexi during our move. She was super stressed, not knowing what was going on, and was throwing up and had the runs. I took her to the vet in fear she had gotten into something while at my parents house. Turns out stress was the culprit. I gave each dog a dose for the long car trip to our new home. I'm not sure what is causing Daisy's problem now. They are supervised outside because we do not have a fenced in yard right now. I don't recall her getting into anything. She has though had a sensitive stomach her whole life (she is 9yrs old). These things seem to come and go every now and then. I started medicating her at about 6am this morning. The vomiting seems to have stopped for now and she is sleeping. I have not found a vet in Joplin yet. But, if I don't see signs of improvement over the today, we will find one in the morning.
I really hope this passes, maybe just being a bug. My husband and I both have been sick this past week with something like the stomach flu. I feel so bad for her and wish I could make her feel better.

Glad to hear he's doing fine. Who knows why? It happens sometimes.
