additive oils - 03-08-2008, 02:17 PM

Does anyone know if giving a dog either fish oil, flaxseed oil or any other type of omega-3 is good or bad idea? If it's o.k., then how much and how often can they have the oils? Any input is appreciated.

Fish Oil and Omega 3 oils would be good for your dog. I found this on a website

Fish Oil and Omega 3 Health Benefits » Fish Oil: Giving Fish Oil To Dogs

Hope that helps

Yes, they're fine. I have several that get a salmon oil gel cap daily. I buy them at Wal-mart. They're made for people but are fine for dogs too.

Radar gets 2 gels caps a day of the Zone (Dr. Sears) stuff. He has cancer so I'm buying the best I can find. I just poke the capsule with a thumb tack and squirt it on his food.

FYI, in humans the utilization of omega 3 from flax seed oil is next to nothing.
The Sears and D'Adamo fish oils are the highest purity available (They share the same Canadian pharmaceutical company and buy the highest lot #s).

Fish oils such as the oil content of tins of tuna, sardines, salmom and herrings and the Omega 3 aspect are healthy additions, externally great for skin and coat, to a dog's overall diet. But keep the quantities right down because they all promote runny poops. There would be some AAFCO-approved dry dog food that contains Omega 3.

Thanks for the responses! I'll probably incorporate a fish oil capsule once or twice a week to start (so I can watch for any stomach problems, etc.).

Usually during the winter months, I can find good deals on human fish oil tablets. I buy lots and then store in the freezer for use later on. Be sure to buy gel capsules that are not enteric coated and not cod liver oil. Fish oil-pressed, will contain the best quality and retain the highest value of omega 3's needed. Some of the same benefits can be found in organic/natural soy bean oil. But it needs to be mechanically extruded/expelled, not chemically.

All of my dogs get at least a cap or two once to twice a week. Several get them every day and if I drop one on accident, it's a race to see who can get to it first.

You can also find in health food stores, salmon oil and other fish oils in a bulk liquid form. Just be careful to not over do it.

There are a couple of brands of cold-pressed salmon oil for dogs on the market that come in a pump bottle, so you can just put a squirt on the dog's kibble. I don't know how costs compare to the human gel caps.

I'm not giving any supplements to Charlie, but might consider the salmon oil if he had skin/coat problems. His Canidae does have Omega 3 and 6 supplements (though I hear the benefit may "cook out" during processing). Is there any reason supplement with fish oil if the dog is perfectly healthy?

Having used both, I can say the human gel caps are more economical.

The fish oils also help with joint health. With your plans for agility with Charlie, you might want to research them from that perspective and see if you think they might be beneficial.
