Red Eyes
I took Dudley to my parent's this weekend, and I've noticed now that the white parts of his eyes are really red. After he takes a little nap, he will wake up and they will be fine, but then go back to the red color after a while. Is this normal? Could it just be that he is really worn out (90 minute drive there and back and we stayed over night) or could it be that he may have been allergic to their cat?
Do I need to take him to the vet or am I just being really paranoid? Thanks for your advice Jeni |

My first thought about Dudley's eyes is blood vessels in the eyes may have been "disturbed" and that's the cause of the redness. Much of course like humans - and therefore in a day or two his retinas eic will return to their usual colour.
Of course there are many other reasons for the red eyes. Stay posted. |

The white part of the eyes being red is an indication of stress. Stress could be the excitement of the weekend - the car trip, visiting at your Mom's and that he's just worn out now. Could be he was somewhat allergic to the cat or maybe even helped himself to some litterbox treats (I know yuck!) and tummy might be upset. It can also be a sign of illness. Don't panic over the last comment.
How is he otherwise? - appetite okay? playful? energy level normal? If he is otherwise normal, maybe just napping a little more, then I'd suspect he's just had a very big weekend for a little puppy. You're not being paranoid, but do get a bouquet of flowers for being a very observant Mom. Just keep an eye on him and he begins acting off, then a vet visit might be in order.Debbie |

He's acting normal, napping a bit more, but that's to be expected after this eventful weekend, but his appetite is still in check (little chow hound) and he's still playing like normal. Thanks for the help and I'll keep an eye on him and keep you guys posted.

Red eyes in young dogs can be the result of infections and in being allergic to something.
There is also of course, trauma. This is damage or the tearing of the eyes from such things as playing too rough, hitting something. It is damage to the surface of the eyes and needs pretty urgent attention from a vet. If Dudley is rubbing his eyes - consult a vet. Stress is not normally a cause for an eye to be red. |
