Yes, my vet said that Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is RARE for Maine, but he's got it... she also said it is possible this is from a tick bit last fall? I don't know - I found a tick on my other corgi a few weeks ago, I check them after every walk... who knows... he seems to be doing so much better with the meds - he's drinking a ton and having to go out to pee more than normal - but I can handle that.

Well that's certainly what we all want to hear...that Marvin is doing better!
Marvin may have the distinction of being the first dog ever in the state of Maine to get RMSF. I typed in "dog spotted fever maine" in a Yahoo search, and a lot of articles said "found in the contiguous US, except in Maine". Huh!

Yes, I saw that too! Weird... I didn't do any traveling out of state last Fall or this Spring with him either... who knows... I have a feeling that it might be here in Maine now, my vet said she wouldn't be surprised to see more cases and now they will definitely be testing for it when dogs are symptomatic.
His barking is annoying me again, a sure sign he's feeling better. Also he ate ALL of his breakfast and dinner today, another good sign... still not making a total pig of himself like his brother, but I'll take it.

Thanks for the insight into RMSF. Real pleased that dangerous ticks are not a occurance in Australia or New Zealand.

There are dangerous ticks carrying a similar disease in Australia, don't know about New Zealand. In Australia, it's called Queensland tick typhus, Flinders Island spotted fever, or Thai tick typhus.

Well that is interesting. My Aussie contacts have never mentioned these ticks but because a great deal of Australia is in the tropics, ticks abound in some areas. That counts out NZ.

We used to be able to count on ticks being fairly dormant during the winter in this area of the US but that is not the case anymore. If the temperature is not freezing there is the danger of getting ticks. They are appearing earlier in the year and a larger percentage of them are carrying lyme disease.

I have a heavily wooded area right behind my yard/house, and I know this doesn't help with ticks... New Englanders be warned, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is here too!

Hello all... found out from the vet today that Marvin, in addition to having Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, has Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)... I was instructed to try him on either whitefish, duck, or venison and bought the venison, as I figured it sounded the most appetizing of the bunch for him. The vet says he has to eat nothing but this food and he can also have the Wellness Yogurt and Apple treats as there is no protein source in them. Who knows!?! I'm not sure if this is indefinitely, or how this works, so any advice is appreciated.

Oh no!!! Sorry I don't know much about IBD, but I can certainly send my sympathy your way for Marvin. I do think it is something controllable through diet, or medication if diet alone doesn't work. Well wishes. Keep us posted.
