Main reason for vet visits - 05-05-2008, 09:44 PM

What is the number one emergency reason why dogs visit vets?

Hit by car, wounds/bites, drowning. No.

It is vomiting.

With vomiting, if your Corgi is also listless, lethargic, weak and/or has diarrhea it is imperative he/she sees a vet pronto. Ring to determine what to do.

I saw this post this AM when I logged on here at work. I didn't think too much about it. Copper has loose stools every once in a while, well early this AM he threw up. I cleaned up the mess and didn't think too much about it cause he layed back down and went back to sleep. Well when he got up with my girlfriend this morning he was acting not normal for him. We went to the vet. Unfortunatly we don't know anything yet. The vet said that his belly feels normal and his temperature is normal, but his gums are a bit more pink than they should be. They took some blood and hopefully we will know more tomorrow. He got an antibiotic and something to help calm his tummy. On the way home from the vet he threw up in the car. When we got home he didn't want to be left alone for even a second. He has a bed behind the sofa where he likes to lay cause it is kind cool back there and he drug it out in the middle of the living room floor before I left to go back to work. I think that he is just worked up cause his belly is so upset, but I'm worried that my baby is very sick.

Poor Copper! Hopefully it is just something minor. Let us know what the vet says. Sending good thoughts your way for a quick recovery!

If Copper is not lethargic or weak or listless, the most likely reason for the vomiting and the soft stools (if that is also a problem) is something he ate or swallowed that was disagreeable, poison (toxic) or unfamiliar. If it is the latter, that should clear up in a day or two. One home remedy is the cooked brown rice and boiled chicken replacement meal.

An update on Copper. Yesterday when we came home from the vet Copper was a little high strung. As the evening went on he calmed down a lot and was starting to act more like a sick dog, laying about and such. This morning he didn't want to get out of bed and go out to do his business. It is not his normal routine to get up with me. We went for a very short walk so he could go to the potty. He did potty, but was very slow in walking. More updated info to come later today when he gets up with his other mommy.

My goodness. I sure hope the vet will come up with a reason that's not too serious. Are you expecting word from the vet today? Wishes to you that he feels better quickly. It feels terriible to have a sick pet.

We should find something out from the vet today. If he doesn't call me I will be calling him. I feel horrible for him.

It doesn't seem too promising. But the chances that it is something Copper ate - something toxic - are high and hopefully it will work through his system and he'll return to normal in a few days.

We went back to the vet yesterday because copper was trying to poop but nothing was coming. They took picutes of his belly and found a VERY large pocket of gas. (thank god no blockages or twists). He is on meds and the vet told me if he hasn't pooed by saturday he will give him a stool softener. He is on a very limited diet for the next couple of days. Last night he was acting a little more like him self. I am totally releived that he is going to be fine.....

So the vet thinks that's all it is...gas? That is a relief is that's the problem. I think I'd be a little concerned if Charlie didn't poop for three days though! Hopefully Coppers gas (and poop) will pass today and he'll be back to normal well before Saturday.

Yeah, unfortunately I saw the x-ray and it really is gas... I'm not looking forward to the passing of that one... I'm sure it won't be pretty smelling..

In five years, Taylor has only once not pooped during a full day period and has only pooped once during a day on a handfull of occasions.

I have never been more excited to see poop in my whole life! We went out last night right before bed and copper pooped for me. It is exciting. He will be on a restriced diet for a few more days, but i think for the most part we are out of the woods.
