Ein got hit by a car yesterday

After her shower I let her out of the bathroom and that was the moment my Mother in law opened the Front Door and Ein just ran out. She is always really excited after her shower. Just at that moment came a car we don't know what exactly happened if the car hit her or run her over. The guy stopped but he was shocked too. Ein was crying so bad. And I was not better.

We live in the Desert and it took us 45 min. to find a vet who would look at her. We just moved in the area so we didn't look for a vet yet. But we found someone how took a look at her. She got X rayed and the vet said that that her Pelvic Bone is broken on 2 different spots and her bladder is bruised, but everything else is fine. We are so happy about that. She will not be able to get babies but as long as she is fine. It doesn't matter.

She is now on cage rest for 6 weeks and gets antibiotics and Pain medicine. We got special food so she has it easier to go to the bathroom. She hasn't gone yet but the doctor said it's fine if she goes till tomorrow morning.
I just wanted to know if anybody has experience with a broken Pelvic and some tips for us.

Oh my goodness Sabrina! So sorry to hear about Ein. Happy to hear that she survived and is recovering. Not much knowledge here regarding broken pelvis, but sounds like the vet has given you a good prognosis. Wishing her a very speedy recovery. Keep us posted.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ein!! Thankfully, she will be ok. It happens so quick!!
Almost a year and half ago, Katie was hit by a car. It cracked her pelvis in 2 places and took her forever to get back to "normal". She really has just started jumping up again and playing more. So it took a year or so for her to heal back. The girl had to back up so we could get Katie out from under the tire. It was on a weekend so we took her to her regular vet and they sent us to the emergency vet after checking her over some because they were closing.
Be careful not to feed her too much. Katie put some weight on and it doesn't want to come off. I can so relate to that. LOL
You take care and give Ein some extra lovin's from us.

So sorry for you and Ein. My front door was an escape hatch for Taylor when he was a puppy. And I live by a hilly road with is sometimes used like a race track As well there is a blind corner to contend with.

The Most common cause for broken bones in dogs is car accidents. It is remarkable that Ein does not require surgery and any placement of pins to help the bones knit back together quickly. of course ops are expensive particuarly it seems in the USA. Pays to have Pet Insurance.

Broken pelvic bones are painful so the pain killers will be needed for some time. I hope all goes well and the weeks caged in go by quickly for both you and Ein. Proceed carefully. Don't want any hint of arthritis to settle in for the future.

Thank you for all the nice words. Ein is doing better for the circumstances. She went to the bathroom yesterday but it was so painful watching her. We first tried it with a towel to in front of her back paws on the belly to make it easier for her but she was so confused and didn't go so the vet told us to let her go without the towel. She is sleeping most of the day and is almost not moving her pack paws what's good. But she is looking for my husband and me the whole time. She wants to know where we are.

We try to not give her to much food because we are concerned about giving her to much, but we just want to make her feel comfortable.

If Ein is on antibiotics she may need to have some live action yogurt to replace the good bacteria in her tummy.

OH! Good suggestion, Jane! Make some small homemade Frosty paws for a treat and give one to her everyday while she is taking the antibiotics. I sure hope Ein gets back to herself soon enough. Poor, little girl!!!!

I'm so sorry this happened. Actually we had this happen to two of our Corgis a few years apart.
Basil was backed over by the Propane truck. We live on a farm and he was interested in what was going on. Just like Ein there were two breaks in his pelvis. The hardest part is finding a comfortable way to pick them up and for each dog is will be different. For Basil we supported his chest and slid a hand between his back legs so the pressure would be balenced. When we took him out to potty we would use a lightweight towel to hold him up so he could manuever with his front legs and find a comfortable position to potty in. It sounds like you have a good vet. Two clean breaks should heal well. You will be surprised at how quickly Ein recovers. The hard part will be keeping her quiet during recovery, but it is also the most important part. The pain medications are important, but monitor them closely and becareful not to over medicate. A little bit of pain is what tells the Corgi to slow down, too much pain is miserable ans she will not want to move at all. Just like us. Our Basil recovered completely, but it took months. about two years after the accident he could jump up onto a bed that was over three feet off the ground. He was amazing.

I let our Lizzie out to go the bathroom right before going to bed. She usually goes out tinkles and comes right back in when it is late, After 10 minutes and she didn't come to the door so we went out and looked. She was in the ditch in front of our farm. we seldom have traffic past our house, but the only conclusion is someone hit her and left her. We took her to the vet and in her situaltion her Pelvis was shattered. There was no surgery that could be done to repair the damage and fortunately, even those there were many breaks, the bones were aligned fairly well. It was very difficult to find a comfortable position to pick her up, but we did and again we used the towel around the belly to support her so she could go the bathroom more easily. We had her fixed since the vet said that she would need to deliver c-section if she were to have puppies. We didn't want to put her through that.

Take things slow. Your dog will want to do more than they should sooner than they should so you will have to be pretty strict. It is interesting how they discover how to balence more weight forward on their own. You can also buy a special harness that will allow you to take weight off the back legs. I didn't know about it until a few years after Lizzie's accident--we just used the towel. Stairs will be off limits for a few months, but you will likely see a full recovery if the bones are aligned well. I would expect that your vet will do another x-ray to monitor the healing process.

Lizzie has a different walk now and I expect that we will see some arthritis in the future, but for now she still chases rabbits at a breakneck speed, herds the geese and ducks and loves to go swimming--same as before. Whenever a Corgi is not exercised as much as he/she would want or need for the day, cut down on the amount of food given. So Ein needs to be on a greatly reduced diet.
Is it possible in the USA (or parts of) to hire a Corgi-fitted/sized wheelchair. These are designed to lift up the back legs and replace them for mobility. Of course one can buy such a chair but I would assume that most owners would do this only if a Corgi is permanently disabled. I have details of perhaps the leading designed dog wheelchair firm in the USA - anyway their wheelchairs are brilliant and they even have an agent in New Zealand.
