It's amazing what people and dogs can swallow and eat without any affects. What is a a rubber band to a little Corgi is a rubber glove to a Golden Retriever. Corgis are very low to the ground and can pick up an object and swallow it in a blink of an eye. Taffy goes out twice nightly for toilet walks so who is to know very often what he grabs, eats, swallows in the dark let alone when he is off-lead running around in parks and bushes. The most dangerous situation for any Corgi is at rest homes/retirement villages/ hospitals where a low lying little fellow can locate a dropped or missing tablet or pill.

Michael,
I can see how it would be worrisome with the possibility of Taylor eating a pill at a nursing home. The Golden Retriever swallowed a thin fabric gardening glove. I have had to put away all of my cats mini furry mice(which they love) because Cody cannot resist picking them up - I had to dig one out of the back of his mouth when we first got him, and that was scary. I am not sure how to get him to leave those little mice alone. Even if I put them up on the second floor for the cats to play with, they will carry them down to our main level and they end up in all sorts of places that Cody has access to -my other Pem never gave the cat toys the time of day. When is Taffy going back home? Linda |

Taffy is out of my hands on Wednesday or Thursday. He is now improving in leaps and bounds. Even Leigh, my wife is impressed. He is just a real scamp of a pup and at seven months is doing things that Taylor at three-four months might have done but only with much less bravado and intent. He still eats voraciously - but I have taught him some manners. He now sits and stays for up to a minute before he is allowed to go to a receptacle containing some of his meal.

Linda and Cindy - No it won't be quite two weeks. Taffy's owner is holidaying in another part of New Zealand and there has been no contact. If I was the owner I would have phoned at least once. I don't really know what relationship the owner, Jack has with Taffy but I suspect it is not a close one or a cuddly one. And Taffy needs cuddling. He obviously enjoys it and gives me a few little kisses when I hold him close - which is the opposite to Taylor who pesters me with kisses. So Taffy has not had the kind of love that brings out the best in him. But he'll be excellent eventually if Jack can change his own attitudes. That's the big question. And quite frankly, it will give me grief if nothing changes.

I can see how it would give you grief if nothing changes. I think that the fact that Jack has not called to inquire about Taffy is disheartening. I can't imagine going anywhere and not calling to inquire how Cody was doing, even in the best of hands. I think Jack looks at Taffy as a pest of a dog and he is hoping that Taffy will come back a well behaved, changed dog, when in reality, it is Jack who has to change in regards to how he interacts with Taffy, in order to get the positive responses he so desires.
It will be interesting to hear how Taffy acts when reunited with Jack linda |

I am replying to several subjects in this thread:
1. SO glad to hear Cody is doing better!! It IS scary when there doesn't seem to be an obvious cause for tummy distress. Chloe threw up a little during that hot spell we had over the Memorial Weekend - but we attributed her lethargy and queasy tummy to the high humidity and heat. 2. Corgis who consume EVERYTHING in their path: last summer, when Chloe was just a new pup, she found Rose Chaffers (nasty little beetles) in the lawn and ate them non-stop - which proved to be a source of loose stools. Chloe has taken to digging in the lawn now and excavating small rocks - and chewing them!! She will eat grass, cat and horse poop, sticks, discarded gum...pretty much whatever is at nose level - which is EVERYTHING! It is extremely frustrating and downright frightening - altho I am getting fairly adept at swiping my fingers in the back of her throat to extract "stuff"...She has begun to respond to my VERY stern, "DROP IT!!!" or "LEAVE IT!!" 4. Michael, how is Taylor getting along with Taffy? Happy to hear your wife is warming to Taffy. But the question seems to remain about Taffy's owner...good luck with this ongoing story...keep us posted. Margo |

Margo- Yes Corgi pups are into everything - though many won't eat poop - and it is very disconcerting and a recipe for what happened to Cody. Several times when he was a puppy, Taylor would walk up to little kids and take from their hands whatever smelt nice - lollypops etc. Thankfully, he hasn't done that trick for a while.
Taylor frapped twice in recent days and he has only done that a few times as a pup. On the occasion I was gardening and had both dogs out with me, Taylor dcided he use Taffy like the pet rabbit we once had - and get Taffy to chase him round our property and through our little stream. When I had tied Taffy to a fairly solid chair down in the little shopping village where I live, and told Taylor to stay sitting (off-lead) while I go into a shop, the pup for some reason took fright and he dragged the chair about 30 metres before crying out loud and having concerned shoppers mill around. I came out of the shop and Taylor, who faithfully stays put when told, had moved to where Taffy was being consoled. So Taylor did show concern too. Otherwise, Taylor thinks he is a pain in the butt and will be pleased to see him go. Taffy wants Taylor as a playmate but Taylor has other ideas. |

Yes no sharing food or affection - and Taffy has objected in his puppy ways to me plying too much affection on Taylor as well. But when it comes to meal time - they are separated, though I can give them treats at the same time when together as long as they think they are getting a fair share of the treats. So when I tell Taffy to sit and stay, Taylor does the same in the hope of getting some of the spoils. Taffy has mastered going up the stairs but not down the inside stairs though he goes up and down the decking steps without any problem. I haven't put any effort into stairs training because he doesn't have any to negotiate where he lives. But he is a brave, curious little fellow and goes places and does things that Taylor avoids. Today I took them for a picnic at a lovely large park with a very attractive stream. We ate our lunches and looked at dozens of ducks and geese and had plenty of exercise. And Taffy jumped into the stream and swam a little - boy it must have been cold. But it was a really nice winter's day. Taffy really loves his long periods off lead with the freedom to run around in all directions and to explore.
