I too believe that it is allergies. The American Bulldog at our house has allergies and would bite and lick one of her paws. Because she has white paws we could see the red irritation, she also had irritation on the end of her muzzle, where it would touch the grass or ground when she was sniffing around. We tried Benedryl put it made made really tired. The vet just prescribed an allergy medicine that is working wonders on her I will get the name when I get home tonight. The vet told us that lighter colored dogs are more susceptible to allergies.

Long time ago when our dogs licked their paws or made the skin sore from licking the vet said it was nerves. Duchess licks her paws sometimes and I tell her to stop before she hurts one of my paws. Because all of her belongs to me.

My Rowdy has the foot thing too, my vet says it's allergies, and he does only do it seasonally, mostly in the spring, he also gets the red patches around the mouth which the vet says is connected to the same alergan, we use benadryl, over the counter, one capsule in the morn and eve and it helps a bunch!

I guess we just have dogs with itchy feet! My vet suggested the benedryl
also; the chewable children ones; but the amount given is based on the weight of the dog, which anyone wanting to do this should consult their own vet about.

We also did benadryl for 2 years and just found the dog food a year ago. Twice Belle had to rushed to the vet because her face was swollen from they think spider bites, cortizone shots were required, then we were constantly in for ear infections as well as a hemotoma in her ear which had to be drained. All caused by allergies. We had to clean her ears 2 times a day at some points. Thank goodness that is all in the past. I just feel bad she had such a hard time for so long.
My vet said it is usually the proteins in the food that causes the allergies to food. We did all of them, finally found the salmon one. Her coat looks awesome too because of the fish oils! Bonus!!

Ace chews on all four of his paws as well. We thought is was his food or treats so we eliminated the new treats and switched to a better type of food. No luck - still nibbled. The vet said if he bites at his feet and scratches at his ears (which he does) it could be a food allergy. We didn't think about grass being the culprit. Is it common for corgis to have allergies? And would you give them benedryl every day?

My past female Corgi was rushed to the doctor one afternoon because of an insect bite; either a spider or a bee, but her entire muzzle swelled up twice the size. He gave her some sort of shot - not sure what it was, but it took care of the swelling, however, within hours after that, she had vomiting and diarrhea - I just remember that day. Amazing what a bug bite can do.

My vet said that different types of grass can be the culprit and with Corgis being so low to the ground, well, their undersides and most of their legs come in contact with just about anything.

I would not give Benedryl without consulting your vet first. Mine told me the dosage I could give Cody based on his weight and said if necessary, I could give it 3x a day. I have not given him any as of yet. He said if Cody ever got stung by a bee or swelled up from a bug bite, I could give him benedryl and that would help him/ However, I am not a doctor, so everyone should consult their own.

Proteins in food can be a culprit for skin allergies - often times, food like venison, or lamb may be a better choice, or foods without wheat. It is trial and error and can be hard because most of us are probably slipping people food treats now and then.

Belle couldn't do the lamb or anything either. The shot was probably cortisone, thats what they gave Belle. We have had to do benedryl every 2 hours for another bite later. Same thing though, whole muzzle swollen, made it hard for her to breathe and eye swelled shut. It was awful. I rode in the back of the van with her on the way to the vet. Scary. It was only a year earlier that we had lost a dog who got into something and had seizures and passed away. Vet thought one of the neighbors may have sprayed slug repellant or something...

I also am taking the I am not a DR disclaimer. These are just things I have had to do!

A couple of observasions: dogs do not scratch and bite their bodies or body parts for no reason - and the reason I would say is not "nerves." For 'nerves', read stress.
