Corgi had some pretty bad diarrhea today. He had an ugly, liquid, and foul-smelling diarrhea at around 6:00 PM that may have had a tiny bit of blood in it. Then, at 3:30 AM he had a regular solid poop, and when I walked with him to throw it in the garbage can, he squatted on the cement walkway and pooped out a very large poop of milk-shake consistency right on the cement. After that, I walked him and he squatted to poop twice more on the grass, but I'm not sure if anything came out because it was very dark outside.

I hope it doesn't persist.

Poor you and Corgi. It seems like there has to be some catalyst that is setting off his periodic problems. Haven't you switched foods several times? Is he on something with a limited ingredient formula?

Hoping that Corgi gets better soon!

signs of blood in it could be giarrdia, make sure if u take a stool sample in it isn't refrigerated. Did u say he had been on Metronidazole before once, it can be a booger to get rid of just have to be careful with the meds and do as the Dr. says. go back to the bland diet right away. Check for cocidiocious also...both have blood in feces. Also is he on probiotics..for his gut...poor baby...
Good luck my prayers are with u

Poor Corgi...seems the little guy just can't stay well. I hope his problem can be identified and solved. Have you considered it is his water? Does he drink water from different sources? ie bottled water, filtered water, hose water?? Just tossing out ideas. Mine just seem to be able to eat about anything (non poisonous) and never have problems, and I would know believe it as I clean up after them daily. They are never exposed to the offal of other dogs (or any animals), that's one thing and they only drink RO water. My prayers go out to you and Corgi for a solution to his suffering.

I'm not sure the symptoms for cocidiocious other than the blood. But poor Gizmo had giardia... TWICE. The first time he had no blood but diarrhea... four poops at once. The second time, it was in the snow. So they couldn't get a good sample. But that had blood. Lots, so they gave us something different at the emergency vet. We had whatever the powder mixed with food the first time, second time was a pill. I'll look at all of our papers when I get home. You might want to definatly ask for the specific test. Because the first test they did they said nothing was wrong. And I said, no something is wrong, and I think they did the float test with it, and came back positive. Also, both times were very... i mean, VERY foul... like... he offended the ENTIRE vet's office.

I hope Corgi starts to feel better. Are you feeding him a bland diet. If it's giardia, it won't help it, but he might tolerate it better. We did rice with eggs.

look in to the food to our corgi eevee is alergic to corn and chicken ..she does real good on lamb and rice or venicine and rice she is also alergic to hering. Alot of the lamb and rice have corn but the nutro doesn't. You may want to talk to your vet about a hypo allergenic dog food. Eevee did real good on that just expensive and I got it at cost...

I have him on Innova. I bought a can of pumpkin at the store and have been mixing two spoons in with his kibble every meal since the diarrhea. It seems to have cleared it up for now.

They drink regular tap water that I refill every couple days.

gogogiraffes, the powder might have been Panacur which is for worms. I've had Corgi on that a couple times. The pill was probably metronidazole, which is an antibiotic. I've had that for Corgi a couple times also.

My question is, if it was the food, would it be so periodic? It seems like his feces will be perfectly fine for a few weeks and then he'll have a random bout of diarrhea for a few days. If it was the food, wouldn't he just have persistent diarrhea throughout?

Tap water here is too full of chlorine and fluoride to be safe for humans or pets. I have an RO system installed that filters these things out of the water before me or the boys drink it.

Innova is a very good food, but as someone else mentioned, it can be too rich for some dogs. Being too rich can cause a soft stool, not necessarily diahrrea, but maybe if a dog is over sensitive to it. You might want to try a different food for your dogs to see if that helps.

Why do you only refill every couple of days? How big is the bowl? Dogs should be given fresh water every day at the very least. Sometimes more often. IMO, a bowl should not be so big that it doesn't get emptied at least once a day.

He should at least have soft stools throughout.

Are you absolutly sure that something he's getting other than food and water isn't causing this. I think you should write down EVERY thing that goes in his mouth. Every treat, tidbit, whatever he picks up on your walks, everything. Maybe then we can figure out what might be causing this.

And I recommend until you figure out why he keeps doing this that you avoid dog parks. He might be picking up something there.

Peggy

Corgi had diarrhea again tonight.

Here's a start. I will make a comprehensive analysis tomorrow on everything that goes in and out of Corgi, with the exact time for everything.
Right now, he eats a cup of kibble per day (With pumpkin at the moment)
He gets some Lamb & Chicken flavored Wellness WellBites, and an experimental treat from the Three Dog Bakery that is Lamb (Without Corn, Wheat, or Soy).

(I haven't taken him to the park since he was extremely sick, and don't plan to again.)

There is something underlying that evidently isn't being caught whether it be from the giardia or missing worms. The Panacur (that would be the powder) and/or the Metrodiazonole (flagyl) should have corrected either issue, but sometimes it takes several treatments to get the results.

As Peggy said, Innova is an excellent food, but it may be too rich for him especially with his stomach being off. Get some tripe and feed that with rice and the pumpkin. Solid Gold brand has a canned version (trust me - it will be much easier for you to deal with than some of the other forms and options you can find it in ). We had a foster a couple of months back with chronic diarrhea and intestinal problems (a reason she came to rescue, her owner was at a loss and limited funds to continue treatment options). Her stools would be the consistency and color of blackberry jam. She too was treated for worms and other usual suspect issues and nothing. I had her for a weekend and put her on the tripe with baby rice cereal and it was the first sign of things solidifying in the time we'd had her. By chance her foster home noticed a small whipworm in her stool a few days later. She was de-wormed again and things have been fine since then.
