Unhappy Scrape - 07-02-2006, 08:33 PM

I found another scrape on Chip's neck Friday morning just before I took him to the vet's. She checked it and said it was a scrape. Today when I came home from Church, Chip had another one - it looks the same - kind of round, hard and an open abrasion. This one was bleeding some. It looks like an injury you would get if you skinned your knee. I cleaned both areas with peroxide and applied neosporin with pain reliever. I am going to call the vet again in the morning. My question is has anyone had this experience and do you think it is possible that Maybelle is biting him and causing this kind of injury? They don't normally play rough but I did notice her biting at his fur and pulling a little. He was itching this one but if it hurt, he would itch it after the the injury occurred. So do you think he itched this and caused this? I am at a complete loss. I hope I made sense.

Curious, hmmmm???? Maybelle could be causing his scrapes, puppy teeth ar pretty sharp. She might be causing small "wounds" which "irritate" his skin; he scratches them, making them larger than the original "injury."

He hasn't found anywhere to stick his head into has he, like between deck rails or a spot in the fence???

Guess you're just going to have to be his "shadow" until you solve the mystery.

Debbie

He did stick his head in the gate and got it stuck. My husband was in the garage and that is where he wanted to be (he isn't allowed) and he started whining and my husband helped him out of that mess so that is where I thought he got the one scrape but he was inside this time. I think you are right. I think Maybelle is pinching him and then he scratches. I will just have to keep watching. After the peroxide and neosporin, the one is about healed this morning. I put more ointment on the second one and will watch it closely. My vet thinks I am crazy so I will hold off calling her. By the way, he is a fast learner, he is now keeping his head out from under the gate. Maybelle's latest accomplishment - My old dog will bark and scratch at my bedroom window in the middle of the night when she wants in and we tell her to get to the door and we let her in. Last night, Maybelle did the same thing. smart puppy isn't she.

How are the scrapes? Have you found an answer about the other one doing it? Best of luck!

Hi Penny:

No - the mystery isn't solved yet but he hasn't gotten anymore. Thank Goodness! The two that he had are almost healed. I just can't figure it out. The only thing I can think of is like Debbie said. Maybelle is pinching him and he is digging it raw. I am glad I have figured out the best way to treat them because they have healed quickly compared to the first one that I took him to the vet for. She gave me a spray that didn't do much. Thanks for asking.

Of course. Tinker is 6 now and has had 3 in her life. I never figured them out either. But again it was probably the dogs playing and then the itching. It breaks your heart to see it!

Yes it does break your heart. Especially when you see blood. But he hasn't had any more and he is doing fine.
