Just in case

Mazie loves to be outside, either laying on out deck chewing on a pig ear or out by her doghouse digging a hole. And she is a very curious dog - what 7 month old isn't?

Lately, she has been trying to catch flying insects. Lightning bug and flies don't bother me (although I can't imagine that they could taste good) - but she also tries to catch the big, fuzzy bumble bees. We have alot flying around now because of the flowering Hosta and other annuals. Of course, when I am near by I stop her from catching them, but I am terrified that she is going to achieve her goal.

Has anyone had to deal with this? What are the signs of a Corgi that has been stung? Are there home remedies that I should have on hand?

Lisa

Lisa,

My past Corgi was either stung by a bee or bitten by a spider a couple of
years ago and her muzzle swelled all up - I immediately called my vet and
took her there pronto and they gave her some shot - I remember her being
ill that same evening with vomiting and having diarrhea.

My vet said to always have the childrens dose of chewable benedryl on hand - in fact, I just talked with him about that. I know the dosage I can give my dog, but since I am not a vet, ask your vet what is appropriate for your dog.

He said if I ever suspect that Cody has been bitten, then I could give Cody a dose and if it didn't help then to call him or take him to the pet emergency center in town(we have one and it is open everyday 24 hours a day)

Ask your vet what is apprpriate for your dog based on the weight. You
may also want to ask what possible symptoms could happen from a bite;
like I said, in my case, it was the muzzle, but maybe the paws could swell
or breathing could be labored - I am not sure.

Linda

A Corgi stung by a bee or a wasp will act much like a human - run around in circles and yell out ouch and try and shake whatever part of their body got stung. Aloe Vera will help enormously to lesson the pain,

It may have been a spider bite for my Pem because she never made a peep, but then again, she never barked as it was and was an extremely quiet dog. I honestly don't think she would have made a noise had she been stung by a bee.

My daughter was the one who came to get me to show me that her muzzle was all swollen and I was fortunate to get her to the doctor quickly

My former bee catcher (fuzzy bumble bees like Mazie) only let out a brief yelp when she did finally catch one and ended up getting stung. Her muzzle swelled; she shook her head and pawed at it a bit.

Benadryl is okay to give to dogs and good to have on hand for "just in case" times. Children's as Linda mentioned is probably better. Check with your vet for an appropriate dosage for Mazie's weight and age.

The aloe vera would be soothing for the pain, so that wouldn't hurt either to have on hand.

Duchess is petrified of flies, greenheads and horse type flies in particular. She will not go down in the dog park field lately. She got a few bumps on her back but I don't know how she could have gotten bitten. I will have to take a closer look at the lumps when I can get her in a good position. In some reguards she is getting better at letting me groom her but sometimes she gets testy.

Mazie just loves being outside and is a regular ant-wrangler - she has made them a regular part of her diet. And she is getting better at catching lightning bugs. I am sure she is going to connect with one of the bees - especially when they are collecting the nectar from our flowering hosta!

Thanks for all the advise on remedies...I'll keep an eye on her and talk to my vet.
