Sneezing and Runny Nose
I just bought a corgi puppy on Sunday. He's doing fine save that I noticed yesterday that he's sneezing a lot, sniffling and his nose is running. He eats fine and has no other symptoms. My vets not open today, but he does have an appointment for his first exam on Saturday.
Should I be worried about this and take him to the emergency vet or can it wait? |

How old is your puppy and have you contacted his breeder and talked to him/her about this?
Positive signs are that he's acting fine and eating, but with puppies things can change rather quickly. I'm not a vet, nor do I play one and I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but it kind of sounds like bordatella (kind of a canine cold). I'd call the vet as soon as possible and at least talk with them. Debbie |

Thanks...he was born on April 30. I got him from a puppy store called Shake A Paw here in Jersey. He's eating and is quite active still. I'll probably call the vet tomorrow morning then since they're closed today unless he seems worse, then I'll take him to the emergency vet.

Yes, a runny nose is a bit of a worry. Sneezing could just be a passing thing , something in the air,or an adverse reaction to newly intrduced food which your pup might be allergic to. As Debbie said - ring the vet you're taking your Corgi to see, and he/she should be able to give you some free advice, ahead of your visit.
Funny that it is left to me to ask what your Corgi's name is. It is usually among the first things asked. My latest story on dogs for publication, is one about a cute, little Jack Russell-Fox Terrior cross named Jack who was also irresistedly found at a pet shop not too far from where I live. Jack was lost for a whole two months in a mountain range and somehow survived. HIs canine sister, a Fox Terrier named Jill also came from the same pet shop. They breed them tough in NZ. A few sites to look at: From <http://www.provet.co.uk/health/diseases/bordatella.htm> Signs The clinical signs are of a cough with varying degrees of difficulty in breathing which depends upon the severity of the infection. Bronchopneumonia with complications can lead to death. Dogs : Bordetella bronchiseptica is the most common bacterial agent associated with tracheobronchitis (known as "kennel cough") in dogs. Disease outbreaks frequently occur during the summer vacations and at other times when dogs are kenneled away from home, come into contact with infected carriers, and then spread it around their neighbourhood when they come out. The typical acute onset cough sounds like a "honk" to owners who often think the dog has something stuck in it's throat. Sometimes there is a nasal discharge and mucus may be coughed up - which can be confused for retching or vomiting. http://www.provet.co.uk/aol/Petfacts...ennelcough.htm <http://dir.yahoo.com/Science/Biology/Zoology/Animals__Insects__and_Pets/Pets/Health/Diseases_and_Conditions/Canine/Kennel_Cough__Bordatella_/> So tell us about "puppy"! What's his name? How did you get interested in corgis? Oh, and most importantly WELCOME! ![]() Debbie |

Thanks everyone! He still has the runny nose and sneezing but no cough. He's eating and drinking, stool and urine seem fine, no vomit, and other than that he seems to not be as hyper as when I first brought him home, he's still playfull and running around. I called my vet this morning and they seem to think it can wait till tomorrow as they don't have anything today open. Thing is, according to his paperwork, he's supposed to be vaccinated against kennel cough and Shake A Paw is AKC certified. My other dog that I got there was perfectly fine. I'm at work now but going to be going home for lunch so I'll see how he's doing.
His name is Loki and he's a tri-color with 4 champions (or so the family tree says) in his pedigree. I also have a 3 year old Cairn Terrier by the name of Corrie. I always loved corgis and got really interested after my cousin bought one. I can only take care of 2 dogs at a time though, especially as I also have birds (parakeets, zebra finches, and a parrotlet). My boyfriend bought me Loki since my oldest dog, Brandie (a PBGV) passed away over the weekend from kidney failure. He was around 11 years old and at least he died quietly in his sleep. Still miss him though. My boyfriend thought a new puppy would help soften the blow a bit.

Thankfully, if little Luki has kennel cough, it is highly unlikely it will be the end of the world and there is a good chance of being able to keep the virus not only at bay but it could disappear altogether in a short period of time.
I have all my fingers and toes crossed. You have a thoughful boyfriend. |
