Cody does not like having his teeth brushed, I wished I would have started him when he was much younger I continue to try, but he is not crazy about it- I have a cat that actually does not mind it and will sit while I brush away - my other two cats - FORGET IT.

For Cody, I ordered Doctors FOSTER & SMITH Dental Clens pads and I have been using them on his teeth and gums - he doesn't seem to mind these as much and makes his mouth smell minty fresh.

I brush Jackie's teeth 2-3 times a week. The biggest challenge is brushing around her tongue . . . she loves the toothpaste, and is always trying to lick it off the brush! Goofy Dog.

I paid the big bucks at the vet's office for this little finger toothbrush thing and some chicken-flavored toothpaste! Chloe thought that was a good treat but the brushing part did not go very well. I probably wasn't persistent enough. Next week I take my 9 year-old cat in for teeth-cleaning - I am sure that after I pay THAT bill I will be a bit more dedicated about working on Chloe's teeth!!

It costs around $150 at my vets office to have a dogs teeth cleaned - they do it under anesthesia - We had to do this with my previous pem's teeth on a yearly basis. We got her when she was 2 and her teeth were not taken care of by her previous owner. Three of them were pulled after we adopted her . I brushed her teeth every week, but it just wasn't enough to keep them clean. So every year, I paid the money to have them thoroughly cleaned by the vet.

My neighbor gives his Golden Ret/mix dog rawhides, the ones with the knots on the end, and never brushes his teeth - the dog is 11 years old and his teeth are very white and clean and his gums look healthy . He said the vet has never had to clean them.

My daughter brushes Maxi's teeth once a week, when she starts work next week I will brush them. When we took Maxi and Medjai to the vet the last time for their yearly exam. The Vet mentioned the tooth brushing to my daughter and son-in-law and proceeded to look at Medjai teeth to show tarter build up, he open her mouth and said well this is a bad example she has perfect teeth, she is 5 now. My son-in-law said all you have to do to have teeth like hers is to eat rock and concrete (Medjai an American Bulldog has extremely strong jaws and teeth and will eat rocks when given the chance. We all so give all the dogs compressed rawhide bones and to watch them eat them I can see how it would help clean their teeth, they chew on them at all angles so all the teeth get a work out. We still brush Maxi's teeth and it does make his breath fresh.

As I have said in a previous thread I started recently, Taylor now gets his teeth brushed with canine toothpaste about twice weekly. And it has made a signiificant difference. He is quite happy now for his teeth to be cleaned and he waits for his treat after brushing is concluded.

I was really good at it before but have been slacking. My girls love it. Tinker will start drooling when she sees the finger thing and I have to push here away from licking the other dogs mouth as well. We have not done it with Pockets yet but he is still fighting me badly with grooming in general so not quite the time to add a new 'torture'. They all chew on the dino bones from Foster and Smith but I also need to take them in and have them done.

Better keep this thread in full view so we can get more responses to the poll and.at the same time impress on any newcomers that brushing dogs teeth wth special canine toothpaste is an excellent health measure. And never use human toothpase as an alternative because it will damage a dog's teeth.

Not only is it bad for their teeth, but it is not good for the dogs to be swallowing toothpaste with Fluoride.
