Lipomas

Hi, I was wondering if anybody here has had experience with lipomas in corgis?

Foxy - even though she's just 7 months old - has developed what we think is a lipoma on her belly by her rear leg (vet appointment tomorrow AM to confirm what it is).

This is something i've never heard of; I would appreciate if you shared your experiences with me, as I don't really know what to make of it in such a young pup.

Thanks!
FoxysMommy

PS - she's not in pain, but I am - as always - a vigilant mommy

I don't have any knowledge of lipoma. Sorry that your girls is not well, but we send her lots of healing vibes.

Foxys mommy,

Here is a site to explain what you asked about. My Betsy had several tiny lumps on her - some the size of a pea - They were all found and removed at different times. Some were beneign and nothing to worry about and some were cancerous, but they got them early. Betsy was much older when she started to get these - around 10 and I would always do a monthly exam on her to check for new ones that might pop up.

Good luck. Keep us posted - she is young, so that is in her favor.

After I'd had Trevor about a month, I was rubbing his belly and found a small lump down by his hind legs, too. I immediately made an appointment for the vet's. When I took him in, they told me it was a umbillical hernia; in other words, his belly button. Well, I felt a little silly, but also relieved.

You can't be too diligent with health matters, theirs or ours. Hope everything turns out OK for Foxy.

Lipomas is almost certain to be benigh ie non-cancerous.

Most older dogs or overweight dogs have at least one lipomas. Is Foxy overweight. How much does she weigh at seven months.

Treatment for lipomas on Foxy's belly is NO treatment. Treatment is un-necessary and not usually recommended.

I found this on the internet: A lipoma is a benign fatty tumor usually composed of mature fat cells. They are usually soft, well defined, and subcutaneous (under the skin). Lipomas are variable in size and shape and may occur anywhere, although they are commonly found on the ventral (under) surfaces of the chest and abdomen. Our older dog (a german shepherd mix) had one of these tumors which the vet removed. It did not grow back. We did not have a biopsy done due to the advanced age of the dog. I hope it is nothing serious. Keep us posted.

Hi everyone -- thank you for your advice and good wishes! I can't say enough how GLAD I am to have found this site.

We saw the vet and he believes it is a lipoma, and recommended the wait and watch approach. He did say it was rare in puppies, but not impossible. She'll probably have others as she grows up, too.

She's not overweight at 7 months, weighing in this AM at 17 lbs. She's a very active little dog (but then, what corgi pup isn't??) so I'm not worried about her that way.

The only reason to have it removed would be if it starts to affect her movement. It's about the size of a grape and right on her belly near her hind leg, so if it gets really large it might interfere with her walking. I have no idea how long it's been there, I just saw it in the past two weeks when I was brushing her.

Thanks again for sharing experience and advice with me. I'm a better FoxysMommy for it!

Riley had a fat lump on her side when she was under two - because it would have been close to her spine if it grew too much, I chose to have it removed. She was fine and although the vet thought she might be prone to them as she was so young, she never developed another. She was not overweight - so I think they are potentialy genetic and some dogs get them and some dont. I always checked her body for other lumps though. I asked the vet about the lump in relation to her cancer and he said they did not have anything to do with each other.
