Back from the after hour vet - 08-22-2006, 09:06 PM

We had to take Darci to the after hours Vet tonight. I got home from work and she was urinating pure blood, and would squat and only go a few drops.

She was feeling so rough, thankfully the Vet was only 30 minutes away.

She has a bladder infection, with a lot of striuvate crystals, her ph was 9, I think 6.5 in the norm.
Poor thing she's laying on the back of the couch resting pretty good right now.

He put her on anitbiotics and pain meds. A whopping $167 bill , but it was worth it to get her some relief for the night. I just couldnt stand watching her hurt.

Oh on the lighter side it was funny watching me run after her in the yard with a plastic bowel to catch the urine.

Catching urine from a Corgi is interesting. I remember I used the top of a cool whip container and slid it under my past Corgi and then quickly transfered it to something larger - Fun

Really sorry to hear about Darci...how do they get those crystals? I have heard about them, but don't know much about it. Does she have to be on any special food during this time or afterwards?

That poor thing....I hope she is feeling better tomorrow.

I realise that going to the vets in the USA is one heck of an expense. They are considerably more reasonable in NZ. But at least Darci is being correctly and efficiently treated. Let us know how she gets on. One never knows what's lurking around the corner.

The last time I paid a vet was for a multi vaccination for Taylor plus a comprehensive check up including taking his temperature and treating his teeth with some of them being a little yellowed in places. The bill came to $37 and the vet threw in some packets of treats.

Cindy

Actually your $167 bill would be quite common around here; I think it is hard nowdays to walk out of the vets office with anything less than $75 to $100 dollars .

Thanks guys, she is feeling some better. Well enough when hubby brought her to our bed this am ( her usual routine ) she was digging me out of the covers. LOL My face was completely soaked.

The crystals the vet said can be caused by lots of things, he said they could be coming from the infection itself, it could be from having a low ph. The ph from what I understand can be from infection, dehydration, or diet, or some pouch in the bladder that can form that holds small amounts of urine that never let the bladder fully drain, setting urine equals striuvate crystals.

He did want me to put her on canned science diet for about a week, they have a food that helps to disolve crystals.

NIkki I live with a self proclamed comedian, my dearest hubby. If we didnt have his sense of humor in our marriage I dont know that we would have survived the last 15 yrs. Its sounds like your dad gave you some wonderful advice.

Yes vets here can be run into some very high bills...
However for Egans last set of shots without a vet visit, just the tech it was $19.00 I was tickled.

$19 for shots; that would be unheard of here - what a deal!

I will mention that we have a pet emergency center here also. It is open
round the clock - their standard flat fee is $95.00 just for the office visit and on top of that then you have to pay for any tests they run and meds they give - it is quite an expensive place, but not much one can do when that is the only option during hours when the regular vet is not in.

I have had to use the place myself.

Hope Darci is feeling better - thanks for reminding me how foolish I looked trying to collect urine when Jackie had her bladder infection! Keep us posted!

*~* CONFESSION TIME: Okay, DON'T LAUGH !! Promise ya won't laugh ?

Here goes...

When I take Midnight & Sunshine for their walks (twice/a/day) around our neighborhood........I seriously & HONESTLY catch their poop in the puppy poop bag BEFORE it hits the ground ! ! !

YES, I REALLY DO !

I am a respectful..."Pooper Scooper" !

I mean...I would want MY neighbors to do it for me !
( They don't of course...I find crap on my grass from time to time. )

Ya promised that you wouldn't laugh !
A promise is a promise !

I usually let the poop hit the ground BEFORE picking it up Nikki!

*~* Sometimes when the grass is wet...the poop gets all SQUISHY when ya try to pick it up with the bag.

~~~YUCKY~~~ !!!
So, I just wait until I see my girls {{squat}}....then, I catch the poop in "mid air" and let it land in the bag !
Okay, BACK TO THE TOPIC !
( sorry... )
*~* I do not know if some other vets do this...but MY VET offers payment plans for patients who live in Nixa. Nixa is a kinda small city...and we are not a "Ritchie rich" kind of area. Springfield, Missouri is about 20 minutes away and I am sure that a vet there would be alot MORE expensive.
I like my vet...she is very gentle, patient, affordable & she explains things extremely well. She also gives paperwork describing the ailment & the care it takes to help your pet feel better.
Too COOL !
