I'm pretty anxious since Milo is at the vet already right now. We're picking him up from his operation later in the evening. Is there anything I should be more wary and careful with?
We got a certificate from friendsforanimals.org. Our vet accepts it but he made us pay for some meds, drops, the the ugly cone for him. He said we have to bring him back 2 weeks later to take off the stitching and he'll be wearing the cone for the next 2 weeks. I feel bad for him since he's being cut and then he has to be humiliated again with that ugly cone. Poor, Milo. Any advice for a nervous corgi owner? Thanks, guys!

I am sure you will be anxious to get Milo home. Honestly, I did not use the "cone collar" on Cody, instead I used a baby onesie T-shirt - the one piece T-shirt that snaps in the crotch Size 3 toddler short sleeve) - fit my Cody perfectly because he has no tail and he could not get at his incision. I used it for about a week and then after that Cody no longer wanted to lick; and they look so cute in them. Every dog is different and maybe you will only need the cone for a week, just watch Milo and see how he does in regards to the licking. Not sure if he is the type to jump on furniture, but you will have to restrict that for several days; not always an easy thing to do. I think you will see that by tomorrow or the day after, he will pretty much be acting like himself.

I was anxious when I had Chip neutered also. It is surprising how well they do though. I didn't use anything on chip and he never bothered his incision. My vet didn't put in regular stitches so maybe that is why. good luck and keep us posted.

The boys have it easy and they are pretty tough, Rupe never wore a cone or anything - Milo will be just fine. Just watch him for the first few hours, if he's going after the stitches, you may have to do something. I don't remember Rupe having to have them out, I think he had the disolving kind.
Let us know how he is when you get him home.

Sweetlychee - We just had Ace neutered two weeks ago. He were nervous as well. We did not use the cone either. Ace did fine, we did have him sleep on our bed for two nights instead of the crate so we could keep him from licking his stiches. We didn't have to take him back to the vet - his stiches disolved. Milo will do great. Not to worry!!

I don't remember Skippy or Oliver having a cone, nor having any problems. Although with Skippy, who was two when it was done, the swelling was so bad, the vet's office practically had to prove to me he had been neutered!! Eventually everything settled down and was fine. It seems like he kind of moped around for about a day, but it take long for his happy attitude to reappear.

Hi Sweetlychee,
How's Milo today? Has the swelling subsided? Corgis are very "hardy" so not to worry too much. A successful surgery will not alter his personality & character at all. He may be groogy for 1 or 2 hours but will be back to normal very soon. Dex had his done in August. Everything went well except for the swelling for 3 days. He was also in pain for a couple of days & didn't really sit on his butt. He would laid his tail between his legs to give it some cushion & very slowly sit gently on it. My heart aches when he does that. We had to put the e-collar on him cos he licks the stiches. However, his stiches are self-disolved so we don't need to bring him back to see the vet. Dex have very high threshold in pain. He doesn't even cry when he is a pup. Very good boy. Will sleep on his own & grin at u when he is awake - always in good spirit. He will never wake us up by licking or bark or anything. However, that day when we bring him home after the surgery... his cry broke my heart. Dex was terrified with the new environment (the cold dark cage) & was wailing so loudly. I could hear it so loudly the moment I swing open the glass door. He was wailing & digging his way out of the cage with all his might. He was totally disorientated & in fear. Tears running down his cheeks. The moment he saw me, he howled. The moment he came home, he sniffed the air, walked slowly to his sleeping area just to confirmed he is back to a place he considered his "home". He was calmed after that & rested. I gently stroke him for a long time & put him to sleep. |

Don't worry, Buta will be in good hands. The vet will usually give pain killers to help in the recovery process. However, being a 1st time Corgi owner, I was a little upset that the vet didn't prescripe any pain killers... He said "No need" I was like... "HUH?" There are several health benefits to neutering. In female dogs, spaying decreases chances of breast cancer (surprising huh!) It eliminates the chances of potential fatal uterus infection experienced by some matured unspayed animals. It also eliminates heat cycle that contributes to messy spotings & unwanted behaviour. Buta is such an angel & sweet temperament. Don't think her present heat cycle gives her any mood swing.. ha ![]() Yes, could still remember all the Corgi guys trying to "date" her & Barn got excited & do it at all the wrong place... ha har The only behavior change (if any) relates to less than desired behaviours influenced by male hormones i.e. agression towards other male dogs, urine marking, inappropriate mounting, roaming & playfulness. All this less than desired behaviours will reduce significantly. Appetite & activity level should not change after neutering. They won't put on weight as well. If it does, it is because they are less active compared to before. We have to watch over their food intake (not starve the poor fella) & compensate it with exercises or walks. So far i think Corgis are not affected after surgery. My boy is still the same - greedy, jumping, bouncing around & frappppp...! |

Hi All,
Thanks for the encouragement and all. I didn't get a chance to reply back until today. For the weekend, Milo had some major rest. When he first got home, it was hard for him to talk. He was lacking a lot of energy. On his right eye, it was bloodshot red. We got worried but the vet was already closed. I saw some stained blood around the area but we didn't want to touch it as it's sensitive around there. We really started regretting our decision since he was so sad and in a lot of pain. We got two meds - antibiotics and pain killer. He slept after his return. He did eat a lot since he was so hungry and thirsty. He had trouble going potty but that was it. The second day, he woke up and wanted to go to our bed. He bounced back pretty quickly but really wanted to gnaw on the stitched. He is using his e-collar but it doesn't look comfortable at all. He's recuperating well at home right now. I feel bad that we won't have Milo Jr's but it's ok. Thank you for all the well wishes. We thought of getting him a pro-collar or something else but we'll stick with that one until we take it off in 2 weeks after he goes back to the vet. He didn't vomit at all so it seems good right now. |

He probably won't need to wear the collar for long - so don't worry. You made a good decision as neutering and spaying dogs and cats reduces the risks for various types of cancers.
Thanks for updating us as I for one was worried we hadn't heard anything! Hugs - gentle ones, to Milo!
