It's defiitely a good idea to try a bunch of stuff & see what the dog likes. I'm trying Rally obedience with Jackie next. She seemed to really like it when we did it for fun on the last day of Basic Obedience. Of course, now that she shows a zest for herding . . .
Also, I agree with Emile about costs in the Northeastern US. It is a major factor in having a pet, not to mention the training involved for any competition dog sport. As Susan mentioned, you have to do basic obedience training before you even start agility training, as you must establish the relationship with your dog, and they must be able to take your directions, stay, etc. All in all, don't be too concerned about it right now. As Michael said, if you are really hooked on doing agility . . . when you are ready to start looking for a pup, look for parents who are good agility dogs. Then, you have at least a year form that point to start working on the basic obedience with your new pup before you even start to think about agility training. It is intensive training, so it will require a good deal of your time. Lots of points to ponder, but this is not the type of dilemma that can be solved beforehand. (I hate those kind!) You will have to figure out what is right for you and your dog wen you get him/her. Planning ahead will help you be prepared, but it's a wait and see kind of situation. Hang in there and don't get discouraged before you even start!

Emilie - Most handlers in agility in NZ are overweight.
I must say that NZ probably is the cheapest country in the world to buy a really good quality Corgi pup. They usually go for $600 and I suppose there are those that can go as high as $800. - $600 NZ is around $420 USA. |
