Yogi has skin problems - 10-21-2006, 03:17 AM

Hello, my name is Leigh Anne. My heart is my Yogi. He is a senior of 13 years, but still loves to play, walk, go bye-bye, and follow me to the ends of the earth if he could!

Yogi has skin problems...scabs that I can't seem to get rid of. I've tried every natural shampoo, etc. I like the idea of aloa vera from one of the members here. Thanks!

Welcome Leigh Anne and Yogi. Have you ever had him allergy tested? I am going through something like this with dillon, no real scabs yet, but he is really chewing. I have an appt on monday with a corgi vet ( she has been breeding corgis for about 10 yrs and is also a vet) for Dillon to be allergy tested to figure out why he is chewing up his legs ( primarily front legs). How long has yogi had these skin troubles?

Could poor Yogi have mange which is an allergy to mites. All dogs harbour some mites but some develop an allergy towards them. Other allergies are a common cause of skin problems - vergetation( certain plants found in gardens, at parks etc) or specific food items. Then there is dermatitis - caused by mites (including house dust mites) pollen etc.

A trip to the vet for a check up would definitely be a good idea. What food are you feeding him? IF corn is an ingredient you may want to check out some different foods as corn is a top allergy cause in dogs.

Oh....thank you so much. I didn't know that! I'll check on that. It is a different food than the last bag. My husband bought it thinking it was better.

Hello Leigh Anne, hope Yogi is feeling better already there are many causes of allergies, might not just be the food. I have heard that certain kinds of detergent e use for cleaning can cause skin allegies. It might also be fungal or bacterial infection. Seeing a vet for a skin scrap test will also be helpful

I love love love love loooovvvvveeeee Corgis!!!

The food aspect for possibly causing skin allergies is very tricky. You can't simply brush it off as the cause of Yogi's problem. I would not want to restrict my Corgi to just one type and brand of dry food (kibble) on the basis that any other could cause a skin problem. Most kibble brands contain similar bulking ingredients. Then there are a whole range of food items that could relate to an allergy. But we are dealing here with a 13 year old Pem who for the past 13 years must have surely had a wide variety of food and it appears that only now is there a problem. Allergiies can even come from chicken let alone beef and lamb. But these allergies are usually sorted out when the dogs are puppies - but it still takes a huge effort to isolate the affending food item.
Taylor had an allergy when he was a puppy - and he went on a no wheat, no beef, diet - as these two items (along with cow's milk) are the most usual cause of an allergic reaction to food. But thankfully, it turned out to be an ivy type vine growing in our garden that was the villian. So it's back to beef and the odd wheaty stuff. Taylor's allergic symptoms was a bit of pinky-redness around his mouth and foot licking. Aloe Vera definitely helped when applied to thses areas.
