newbie here

Hello Im Katz and Im from the Philippines. I still don't have a Corgi but I really want to have one.

I saw a cute pem corgi in one of our local petshop but I read somewhere that it is not nice if you dont buy it in a breeder. Ive been trying to find a breeder but it seems that it is not a common dog here. Help please. Is it ok if I just buy it in a petshop. I talked to the owner and they said that they had it imported from a breeder.

Also, this is my first time to really own a dog. We have dogs at home but it belongs to my aunt. Is a corgi ok for a newbie?

Hi Katz
I can give you the email addresses of three leading Pembroke Corgi breeders in New Zealand who regularly export well-bred and guaranteed Corgis to all parts of the world. At least one of these breeders also has an excellent website. They would have all sent Corgis to the Philippines in the past. New Zealand is rabies-free which means that dogs from here do not need to be quarantined in other countries (we are one of only six, I believe) but it still depends on the regulations of the countries the dogs go to.

Any leading or prominent Corgi breeder in New Zealand would in no way sell their Corgis to any pet shops - here at home or anywhere in the world. You might be just threatening in the hope of a quick response, but don't buy any dog from a pet shop because you are only fuelling a wicked industry.

Hello Michael. yes please send me the email adds, that would really be helpful.

I just called PCCI (somewhat like the AKC of the phil) and they gave me a contact to one breeder here in the Phils. I will check on the pups sometime soon. What are the things that I need to check to see if the pups are ok? I really am naive about this, sorry

Im planning on getting a corgi in a month or two. For a beginner like me, what are the preparations needed? I really dont want to mess this up, I want my pups to be happy with me

Hi Katz
First. it won't be cheap - a Pembroke Corgi pup coming from New Zealand.

Secondly, Pups are not available on tap ie just when you want one. I don't expect they will send any available, chosen pup overseas until the pup is three months old. If you really, really want a terrific Corgi pup, the waiting will be worth it.

Thirdly, you'll need to email me so I can send you the details of the people to contact via your normal email.

Fourthly, You will need to prove to the breeders that you are a suitable owner and have a suitable, fully secure property.

Here is my email address: mjromanos@hotmail.com

Hi Katz, I'm new here too.

Wow, you on the other side of the world from me. Sorry I can't be much help in finding you a corgi but it looks like Michael has given you some good suggestions.

Looking forward to the day you'll be posting about your new dog and showing us pictures. Be patient; a good dog is worth the wait.

Good luck,

ooooh, He/she looks perfect. I know you don't care, but is the Pem a girl or boy? At 14 weeks, it is a great age to get a Corgi pup. He or she should be well adjusted to other dogs (sisters and brothers) and had some good times and lessons of life from his/her mother and the rest of the family. Just being a little longer with the real mum is important too

Cool Hi, Katz (newbie from Phillipines)

Good morning, Katz. Do you still live in the Phillipines? I'm in New Mexico and want to share with you how I located our two Corgis (one Pembroke, the other a Cardigan).

First of all, I looked at the two breeds' national web sites for rescue and breeder information. As we did not want a young puppy, but a more-mature dog, we felt rescue would be best. At the time, we could not find a good match for us, even though we drove hundreds of miles to a nearby state.

Several months after our search began, I read a Corgi for sale ad in a local newspaper. We bought that overweight Pembroke girl, and she is now in good shape, healthy and happy. Six months later, through the help of various people on two of the Corgi e-mail lists on the internet, we purchased a young Cardigan male.

You asked if a Corgi would be the right dog for a newbie? Maybe or Maybe NOT. It all depends on whether you're willing to let a small dog run you and your household. If NOT, you might want to read about how to be the "alpha" over your dog.

Best of luck.

Lola

I"m sure you will feed her well and she won't be so thin. The breeder should of had her wormed by now - especially since she is over three months old. Better ask the breeder if this is the case. A thin Corgi could be carrying lots of worms.

Yup the corgi is dewormed, He just had the corgi dewormed on the day we visited the dog I think he was kinda busy and everything, he is going to visit canada to get a boxer and his beagles were going to go on show the FF day, but he has a lot of helpers to take care of the dogs.

The breeder also advised us on the food for the corgi hehe

thanks for the tips lola, Ive read that before that you have to assume alpha over the dog or else! hehe

Hi Katz
If the Corgi is on the thin side, it could be that her breeder has not had her wormed. At 14 weeks she should have had a worm tablet by now to get rid of those nasty slimy creatures that eat from wthin what she she eats. If anything, Corgi pups of that age should be sllighty tubby.

Oh no! she's not the least bit tubby. Is this serious? well the breeder said that he's worming her that time. It's not too late is it? And I will be getting her next week or next next wk. What can I do to make her healthy if she is still thin by that time?

From the photo she looked fine to me. Back in September when the resident Cardigan puppy was that age he would go through growth spurts - one day looking just fine, a day later looking too lean - so a slight increase in his food was in order. To me she doesn't look alarmingly thin, nice bone, maybe a little high on leg just now which may give her the illusion of being thin. Sounds like the breeder is on top of things with de-wormings and vaccinations, puppy looked bright eyed and good in the photo. It also sounds as if the breeder will be there for help and guidance which is an additonal plus.
