Miss Gambler finds a puppy! -
11-25-2006, 03:13 PM
This is one trip that we will never ever forget! It's great to be back home, especially with my husband, but we are having a truly crazy holiday. On the way in, Miss Gambler was antsy so we decided to pull over at a rest stop, something that I NEVER do, I only stop at scheduled spots and in cities and at places I am familiar with. We were in the desert, and it was incredibly windy, as we were walking with Miss Gambler, she literally pulled us over to an area where there was an old basket and I didn't want her to have anything to do with it, and then when I saw movement under the cloth inside it my first thought was that it was a rattlesnake and I backed off but Miss Gambler would not stop barking. My husband, however, would not leave the area without determining what was in the basket, and he had a gun(he's a big city cop with all the macho attitude that goes with it). When he pulled the blanket/tarp off, he found a puppy, and Miss Gambler immediately quietened and her head was tilting side to side, then she starting hopping all around and looking like she was asking, "Can we keep it, can we keep it, huh, huh?" To sum all of this up, we did not leave the puppy, so far she appears to be healthy, and Miss Gambler, who I have made comments about on this site about never wanting anything to do with another dog, suddenly does not want to be out of sight of her new friend! I'll send some pictures tonight, just had to share this, and we really don't know what we're going to do with the puppy, we have always wanted another one. Also, the vet says that she's a dachshund, and as far as he can tell, she's not even a mix. He says that it's not uncommon for unwanted litters to be dumped. The rest were either taken, or more likely than not, were eaten by coyotes.

That is terrific! I can't wait to see pictures. It sounds to me like this was destiny and you now have another baby to spoil. Miss Gambler will adopt her for sure.

Ah, how sweet! I'm glad that Miss Gamble is liking her new friend. That is great. We stopped at a rest stop on our way to the lake yesterday (we always stop there). Zia had to go to the bathroom so bad, but would not go at that rest stop. So we drove another 10 miles or so to another rest stop. As soon as I sat her in the grass, the squatted and did her business. Guess we won't be stopping at that other rest stop.

I forgot to mention that she is extremely sweet, and clingy, she wants any and all attention from us, which I take as a good sign, and Miss Gambler is extremely protective(man, do I ever see another problem forming!) and the puppy is around four weeks old.

It sounds like Miss Gambler has adopted this pup as her own and she is going to mother it after all she found it. That is great news. Hopefully, the protectiveness will wear off when the pup gets a little older. A corgi's thinking is like this, If I want it, it's mine.

Now you'll have two dwarf dogs - one breed to go. Dachshunds are clingy sort of dogs - especially the miniature ones. There are six different Dachshund types. They get along well with Corgis.
Now that Miss Gambler is a hero, she deserves an award. Any suggestions?
Have you contacted the media with this story. I'm sure there will be general interest value.

I hope all is well in your household w/ the new pup.
Found in a basket in the middle of the desert..... kind of seems like fate to me!
I hope the puppy is healthy and whatever you decide, Miss Gambler saved the puppy's life, now she is responsible for her!
Lulu's breeder had a litter of pups 3 months before Lu's litter (she co bred this litter). One of the male pups from the early litter is currently being shown by the breeder. He has always lived with 2 siblings from his litter. He also lived w/ Lulu and a sister from her litter but within the last 3 months, Lulu and sister have been rehomed.
Everytime he sees Lulu or her sister, he loses all concentration and wants to play with them.
Unfortunately this happened at his last show! The family who adopted Lulu's sister brought her to his show. He got one look at her and had a terrible showing. He only wanted to be w/ Lulu's sister!
Sometimes bonds can be pretty strong.

Oh MGM- what a touching story. I am so glad that you stopped there and were able to save that little pup. The fact that Miss Gambler has accepted it already is amazing and yes i take it as fate. Are you planning on keeping her? have you named her? you mentioned that she is only 4 wks old, did your vet say anything about any special feedings etc ( I am assuming that a 4 wk old puppy is on solid food by now...is that wrong? OR are you bottle feeding? ) I cant wait to see photos.. I cant believe people just throw away puppies like that, makes me so sad, but this one ended happily with this little girl getting saved by MGM and Miss Gambler!

Is it just me, or does this sound like a fairytale or a children's story? If this wasn't fate, then I don't know what is... Can't wait to see pictures!!!!

Dillydoodle: The puppy, and she is quite healthy looking, considering, was able to start eating puppy food, and with no problem. And yes, I have thought of a name, Mojave Girl, that's the desert area where we found her, and it keeps my initials MGM(Mojave Girl's Mommy). The vet says that she is a probably a wirehaired, so I've been busy researching that. She's the salt and pepper(white and black, like a dalmation, with one blue eye and one dark, but the vet said that the dark may still turn blue). She's quite beautiful, very exotic. I will post some photos tonight, I just need my husband's laptop.

Wow, what an incredible story! Good for Miss Gambler! I think a corgi and a dachshund will make a great pair

The color you described sounds a little like what they call Dapple- I have never seen a dapple wire haired dachshund in real life ( only on the internet) they are really cute. I can't wait to see photos of Mojave Girl...Tell hubby to give up the laptop LOL!!!

Wow, what a story MGM! I agree that is fate! I love the wirehaired Dachshund type. There is one that lives around the corner from us and we saw one today at the park. Good thing it's small enough to fit in the Miss Gambler-mobile too!
I agree with Michael about an award or some kind of recognition. I think Purina has animal hero awards you should look it up and submit it!
Good for you, you both saved her life.
