blue eye turns golden or brown - 12-29-2006, 08:27 AM

I have a two year old cardigan female who has one blue eye. A couple of months ago it appeared her blue iris was turning a golden or brown color, and the white of the eye was blood shot. It lasted a few days and then returned to normal. Has anyone ever encountered this before or know what it might be. The vet is alittle concerned she may have kidney failure. Is this a common problem in cardigans and how is it treated?

It is interesting what some vets come up with. I haven't yet consulted one concerning your Cardi but just as with humans, a dog can get a bloodshot eye temporarliy and it reverts back to normal after a blood vessel in the eye has 'reattached.'

The other most common reasons for a bloodhsot eye are: foreign body in eye, scratch, irritation.

Then there are the less likely possibiliities: allergies, glaucoma, tumors, high blood pressure and conjunctivitis - but with these the discolouration would remain at least for some time and not simply clear after a few days.

Did the vet run any blood test, or is this just a thought of his? I would think that if she were having kidney failure, other symptoms would be occuring and her "number values" in regards to how her kidneys were functioning would not be in the normal range on the blood test results.

Also with kidney disease there is vomiting, loss of apetitite, loss of weight. Not necessarily all the symptoms together but there are some good websites about it.
