Oh PS I chortled about the chicken-killing! I once had a very "fieldy" dog staying with me to be bred to my Ch. Stud dog. She was a Ch. CDX WCX daughter of the last living Ch. AFC Golden Retriever. Sadly, there are now no more Goldens that can win in the breed ring AND succeed in field trials. The genes with the birdiness, marking ability, athleticism, nose, desire, ambition and courage are gone for the sake of big hair and clunky legs. Too many people who didn't know what a bird dog was for started breeding them.
Anyway, she sauntered out to my chickens (who lived with Goldens and weren't afraid of them) and grabbed a red hen right in front of me. My husband and I grabbed her immediately but with all our strength we couldn't keep her from killing it. As soon as it was dead she spit it out. I was appalled. Up to that time I had no idea how that 'instinct' burned in them. Goldens are supposed to have a soft mouth but this one didn't. From that day we called her that old Champion Chicken Killing Dyna. Thanks for the memories. |

We had a husky once years ago that found a dead chicken and that was the start of that. We could not for the life of us break her from killing chickens. I don't know what instinct she had. Fortunately, we moved to an area that didn't have chickens. Then she started going inside peoples houses and stealing things if they left their door open. Needless to say, we had to put up a fence.

Oh Bonnie, that's too funny. It must be a husky thing. There was one that lived next door and he used to come over and go in the barn and steal things. I once went over to their house and my enamel bucket was there and some shoes and boots, and horse equipment and brushes, and stuff I didn't even know I was missing. White Fang's owner told me to pick up whatever was mine because she had no idea where he got his treasures or who it belonged to.

Bonnie and Bayoucourgi ~ those stories are hysterical! I cannot imagine what I'd do. Well, I guess maybe kinda sorta I can...Zip goes out each morning and gets our newspaper. One morning he ran down the sidewalk and stole a newspaper from someone else's driveway. (Thank goodness it was one of my close friends). Anyway, the newspaper lady got a kick out of that. Said she just threw them another one because she knew Zip would bring us ours. Zip was so proud of himself and he sure looked cute running back down the sidewalk with a newspaper in his mouth! Had to call my friend and tell her that Zip stole her paper. She thought it was funny, too.
