Just joined and just looking to find out about this breed. Do not currently have a Corgi nor a pet for that matter. But we are looking for sure. I have minor allergies. Was wondering about these dogs in this area.

Hi Carol and Dave
What area? What allergies?

Corgis are thick coated and they shed their coats. There is loose hair at all times. That's where some humans can come to grief if they have allergies that are related to coat shedding dogs which can promote nasal-related ailments generally known as hayfever and ashma. That is why such breeds as Bichon Frise, Poodles and Wheaten Terriers have gained in popularity - they are among a group of dogs that don't shed their coats but require trimming from human intervention.

Both my sons have had forms of ashma, hayfever and bronchil attacks but no doctor has related these things to our Corgis. Ashma is a very common problem in the area I live in due to the damp valley conditions - So it is only in some cases that a coat shedding dog is responsible for these kind of allergies. I have a friend who loves my Corgi but he can't have one because such a dog would obviously affect him.

Hello Carol and Dave, Schnauzers dont shed their coat either. Also a lot of Asthmatic sufferers here have a Chihuahua (the long haired ones are really pretty) because they believe that the oil from their coats helps to lessen the severity of this condition. I do not know if this would work for other allergies.

my son (18) has allergies, and the dog certainly affects them. He has to take daily prescription allergy meds, that allows us to all live together.

Depends on how bad your allergies are you may want to pick another breed.

You can always have allergy testing done to see what you are most allergic to.
I agree as Michael said there is always a degree of loose hair.

Its been a year since I last got into this site. However, thank you all for answering my note. My allergy is not severe. Therefore I'm into an unknown area. My experiance is that I have been into good and not so good cycles. I've recently retired and have had various dogs as pets in my life-none of which were allergyfree type dogs. And I think I did very well considering. I've recently done a little Internet research on Corgis and of course they can be hard for someone with allergies. I think my next step is to visit places where Corgis are at and see if I have any initial problems. I live during the Winter in Clearwater, FL and in Albany, NY the rest of the year. Does anybody have any ideas of locations at/near these places that I could visit???
Thanks a million for your patience, Dave

Carol and Dave:

I live just east of Albany. Drop me a note when you get back to the area, we can meet up w/ a few Corgi friends and give you a Corgi "imersion".

As some wise person once wrote, Corgis shed twice a year for 6 months at a time.
