Well where to start...

My wife and I have two Pembroke Welsh Corgi's. We love them to death, they are like our daughters. They are both females, we plan to breed our first Corgi within the next week or so since she's going into heat right now. Anyhow now with the pictures, the tri is Shelby and the fawn is Lexus.

This picture is the funniest b/c the face my son is making, plus it looks like he's doing thumbs up.

Hi Jon,

I live in Newark, so we're practically neighbors! Love the pictures of your girls. Good luck with the breeding. I had Duncan neutered when he was young. Be sure to let us know if and when the blessed event happens, maybe I can talk my husband into another dog.....LOL!

You have two lovely female corgis. I may as well be the first to ask, Why do you want to breed your dogs? Are they old enough? Do you know anything about breeding for standard? Experts, am I asking the right questions?

There are post on this website that will give you some reasons to rethink breeding. However if you know what you're getting into, welcome and good luck. Jane

Lovely, happy pics. Congrats.
The name Shelby reminds me of a common New Zealand saying: "she'll be right" which means that things are sweet, alright.

I neglected to mention the rest of the family that I see in the pictures. Do you have more than the two children and grey kitty? It is surprising to me to see the cat in the same scene with the dogs. My corgi would not let that happen. Great looking family to be sure!

We have wanted to breed Shelby b/c she meets all breed standards and has a great temperment. She is seriously the best dog I've ever owned, and I've had a lot of dogs in my life. Plus, we have a huge family and have several friends/family who already want a pup. We only plan to do it once, unless she handles it really well and has no complications, then we might try once more. We found a stud from a local breeder who said she's more than willing to do it for us. Plus my wife is a certified dog trainer, she knows a bit about the breeding process, but we have both been reading up about it since we got her as a puppy.

Oh and we only have one child, a 5 month old boy. Then we have the two Corgis, a grey kitty, two Siberian Husky's (are mine, but live with my parents), and a Rat Terrier (lives with her mom). The Corgi's love the cat, they chase it around like crazy, but the cat likes to be chased around. They sleep with each on the couch, she'll wrestle, play, and bat at them with her paws all the time. It's cute.

That's cool. Do you go to any of the local dog parks around here? We go usually every weekend, but have only seen one Corgi.

Glad to know you have put some thought into the process of breeding. We get a lot of "Newbies" on here who think puppies are just so much fun. I would have thought so myself before I read all the postings of the experts on this site.
If you do breed your female you will find a lot of good advice here. Even in an emergency if you have a question there is usually some one that knows how to handle it. Sometimes you would not want to call a vet for what might be thought of as a silly question in the middle of the night. Jane

I work every Saturday (yuck!), and don't know of any dog parks in the Columbus area. I don't think they have one in Newark, none that I have found. Where are the ones in Columbus at?

I've only been to three of them in Columbus, there are more, but some of them require a member fee. We've only been to free dog parks. The ones I've been to are the Gahanna Dog Park, Alum Creek Dog Park, and there's one off E. Livingston on the east side of Columbus. There seems to be a lot of bigger, more aggressive dogs at the East side one. One lady had a pit bull puppy you could tell had no training and it kept trying to attack Shebly and wouldn't leave her alone. The lady just would call for the dog, didn't try to take it away. We won't go back to that one again.

I like the Alum Creek park b/c it has a water area for the pups to swim and our Corgi's love the water, but they got giardia from it last time we were there so they really haven't swam too much. The Gahanna park is nice as well, the people seem to be really nice around there and they also have an agility course set up.

Do you work on Sunday's? Maybe sometime we could meet up for the Corg's to play together. They really love their own kind, at least mine do. lol

How old is Shelby? In the photos she looks rather immature, meaning high on leg and and chest has not dropped. She's also very straight in the shoulder. Hopefully the stud you have chosen for her will help correct her front.

Temperament wise, the stud's temperament is going to play a big part in the puppies' personality and temperament, so if his temperament isn't as wonderful as Shelby's, then don't expect a repeat of her in the offspring.

Reality is once those puppies hit the ground and it is time for them to go home, many of those who have said they want a puppy will have gotten another dog/puppy from somewhere/someone else and/or changed their minds. Happens ALLLLLLLLLLL the time with Breeders, in spite of waiting lists and even deposits paid.

Glad to hear you've been reading up on whelping. You should have come across by now that, in the US at least, Pembrokes have a high tendency to need c-sections, Pemmie puppies are not the easiest to get going and need help getting started. I hope you are also prepared to lose puppies. I expect you're already making arrangements with your vet to cover these potential emergencies and have him/her on stand by. You'll also know you need to schedule appointments for the puppies when they are 3 days old to do tails and have dewclaws removed.

And, while Jane's comment is flattering and meant well, IF an emergency comes up and no matter how stupid you think a question might be ... CALL YOUR VET. DO NOT post a question here and hope for an answer once labor starts or if Shelby or a puppy seems in distress. Someone may be able to answer, but there is no guarantee that anyone who has the experience and/or knowledge to answer will be around when you need the answer. Don't take the risk.

Debbie

I don't work Sundays, so maybe we could set up a playdate in the future. If not before winter, then in the Spring. The Alum Creek one sounds okay or the Gahanna one. Right now, I've been busy with my parents on Sundays doing errands for them. They are nearly 80, and my mom is having knee trouble.
Duncan has only been around his sister, Chloe and the neighbors use to have a little Jack Russell/beagle mix; that's why I wish there was a dog park nearer to me. Before I got Chloe, I did try a couple of other rescue dogs, but they were bigger like lab or retriever mixed, and Duncan wasn't too happy with the bigger dogs. He does seem more comfortable with dogs his size. Chloe, she is the one I worry about. Being a rescue, I'm not sure how well she will tolerate strange dogs. But, we could give it a try!

Of course my comments were well meant and I should not have used the term emergency, while saying that there may be some answers on this site. I have found comfort in having questions answered that I didn't think were neccessarily life threatening. And I have seen postings giving help and guidance to unexpected occurances.
Thank you Debbie for giving some really good points to consider. I had a gut feeling that Shelbie was too young. Maybe it was just the pictures. Jane

Shelby is about 20 months old. This is her third heat cycle. I've heard of people breeding after the first heat cycle. I think she'll be fine. A woman who boards her horse at the same farm as us works at a vet office that specializes in dog pregnancy, so I think we'll be fine as well.

The male we've chosen to stud her is a very calm and loving tri that we found threw a local breeder website. This is her website, Buckeye Pembroke Welsh Corgis, the male at the bottom "Rockstar" is the male who will be the stud.

I knew what and how you meant your answer Jane. I was hoping to ward off any false sense of security as we've had a few pop up on here with their corgis already in labor and wanting to know what to do or how long they should wait for puppies. That's not the time to be relying on a response from an internet forum.

Top Corgi breeders in New Zealand and Australia will allow a female as young as 14 month to become pregnant as long as they are knowledgeable about the female in question.
