Hello :) - 10-23-2007, 07:58 AM

Hi everyone!

I'm not a corgi owner yet, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to join and learn as much as possible about the breed

My name's Samantha, 22 years old and I live in South Africa, I have 3 dogs (2 German Shepherds and 1 mixed breed). I really want a Corgi but I'm still studying (from home) and I want to be earning a steady income before a get another dog, not to mention my parents aren't too keen on adding a 4th dog anytime soon - got to keep the parents happy too!
I'm particularly interested in Cardigans, there are only a few in the country that were imported a few months ago, but I've already been in contact with the owner/breeder and I met her this last Sunday at a dog show and finally got to meet Cardi's in person! Needless to say I thought they were adorable

Anyway, enough rambling from me, I shall go browse the forum now and learn more about Corgis

Hi Samantha,

Welcome! This is a great place to learn about Corgis. Good luck with the studying and income scene.

Keep us posted if you get a Corgi. Your parents will at least be happy to hear, "...but he won't eat much" (compared to the GSD's anyway).

Thank you for the welcome hehe, yes I should imagine that the feeding costs for a Corgi will be a bit less than that for the GSDs

Feeding a corgi cheaper? At times I wonder....LOL! With their always "I"M STARVED!" plea in their eyes. Anyway, there are great posts in GoCorgi forums about feeding, and you'll see the arguements about what some think are the best. Just don't overfeed, since they will consume everything in sight and ask for more. Corgis are so prone to getting overweight, you do have to watch the food and snacks ratio. Thats my problem. I don't always know when my husband gives them snacks, that I've gotten to cutting their soft treats in half or fourths (if they are large pieces). They last longer and that way, their getting smaller portions.

haha, my Greedy Shepherd Dogs also give me the "I'm Starved" look! Hopefully by the time a Corgi comes into my life I'll be mostly immune to it... I'll go look at the posts about feeding

That's one of the reasons that so many people have more than one Corgi - three Corgis would equate to a German Shepherd at meal time.
