4-H is a lot different then the dog meetups. Most counties offer free or low cost obedience classes, clinics and seminars with groomers, vets and other dog professionals. Places to compete with your dog with people your own age. You will get a lot more structured learning and help from experienced young dog owners. Also as the members get older, most are required to help out as junior leaders and mentor the younger or new members.
Right now I teach 10 weeks worth of classes starting in April and running till Fair in July. We do 4 levels of obedience, agility, rally and showmanship. All for free. I also teach a modified version in the winter, targeted towards new members or new dogs. Our county has an average of 60 kids in the program with a core group of 25 that do everything. Many of the kids over the years have developed wonderful friendships. It's very amazing. Mykennel club helps out with seminars and volunteering to teach a class or two.
Worth taking a look into!
