This is Odie -

Here's my monster. He's my AKC Pembroke. He's a pretty deep red, and I believe lightly sabled. There's an awful lot of black mixed in between his shoulders, at his tail base, and on his ears. He's a year and a half old now. He's not neutered, and no plans to be so. He's very bossy, and gets quite grumpy when he's ready for bed. His best friend is a huge GSD that lives next door. They've decimated a part of our fences so they can play every time they go potty at the same time. We live in San Antonio, TX and have not seen another corgi here yet. I keep hoping we'll see one at the dog park on of these weekends. We're waiting until he turns 2 to get all his testing done (OFA, CERF, vWD). If that goes well we may consider breeding him. We'd love to add a second puppy to our little family. We may get a 2nd (& female) PWC. Nothing certain yet, just having fun for now.

Welcome to GoCorgi! He's a handsome dog, with a lovely intelligent expression. Just weekend before last, Charlie finally met some other Corgis at the dog park...the first he'd seen since he left his littermates!

He's a pretty red! I can't see any sable. He's a red and white.
Where did you get him?
There are lots of Pembrokes in Texas and two Pembroke Clubs.

Odie is a trully dark (burnt) red which a lot of Pem fanciers just love. I cannot see suficient signs of sable for him to be other than a red & white Pem. Is the white patch on his back within the Pem standard in the USA? If not, it won't preclude him from being used to good advantage as a stud dog just make sire that the females are not coat fault-marked. Very nice of your fellow to want to play with the big dog nextdoor. So glad it wasn't the opposite.

The white patch on his neck is a partial collar and is just fine.
And if he were a mismark, yes that would or should stop him from being a sire. We do not recommend breeding mismarks in the US.

As Peggy said, we don't breed mismarks in the US. Even more important than the phenotype of the female, is what is behind her. Some plain dogs with very little white can produce a lot of mismarks if there is a lot of white behind them.
People who don't breed and have no experience in that realm really shouldn't be speculating and giving out breeding suggestions.

I would say that the USA has a large number of mismarked Corgis produced from many different types of breeders.

Well you can say that, but you wouldn't necessarily be right and it depends on which breed you are talking about too. Cardigans allow for much more white than do Pembrokes and mismarks are not unusual in litters across the board - usually in the form of half masks - color not surrounding the eye.
In Pembrokes, really very few mismarks seem to occur proportionately. In all the dogs I have had come through as rescues, I've had one - a boy with body white. I have seen just one Pem with white ear, although I do know of one other. In January at the Polar Bear Picnic I saw my first half mask Pem. I have seen 3 or 4 Pems with white on their stifle. I've seen exactly two whitlies, although I've seen pictures of a third. I have a foster dog that is a bluie, which I took to a club meeting for "show and tell" because outside of maybe one other club member no one had ever seen one. Of the membership on GC, I think there is only one on here. I do know of a couple of horsey corgi breeders who did use a bluie for stud though. These numbers are over 15 years or so time and observing corgis at specialties, picnics - twice a year (where #'s can approach near 100 corgis at one time some years). all the rescues I've had and browsed on Petfinders.

I don't believe that there is much of an allowance for white on a Cardigan? (And don't go ballistic on me!)
Aside from that the Pem is quite handsome. I also think it is admirable to have all of the health testing done! Cheers!

There is much more white allowed on a Cardigan than on a Pembroke.
Pems: White is acceptable on legs, chest, neck (either in part or as a collar). muzzle, underparts and as a narrow blaze on head. Very Serious Faults: Whitelies-Body color white, with red or dark markings.
Now if you go to: Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America
You'll find acceptable white markings for a Cardigan, all of which would be considered mismarks in a Pembroke.

Will would be considered a mismark in Pems, FWIW.
