New prospective corgi person - 04-02-2008, 01:42 PM

Hi!

My name's Rachel and I am currently very sadly petless, but my apartment building decided to allow dogs (YAY!), so I'm hoping to get a corgi this summer. My family has always had big dogs, so I love corgis' big-dog-small-legs personality. Right now I'm doing loads of research and starting to look for breeders.

I'm sure I'll find loads of info here!

You are lucky that Corgis are a non-toy breed that are adaptable for apartment life though there is an extra workload required on the part of the owners.

SEATTLE! YAY! Vanette and I will be very excited to see you at Corgi meet-up day when you get your puppy then! =D
Westin and I live in Bellevue in a condo, so I have lots of experience with the "corgi-in-an-apartment" exasperation!
welcome!

Welcome. Your reasons for taking on a corgi as your companion are the same reasons why my wife and I have Nick. There are the biggest little dogs you'll ever meet!

I have to give you a hint. Corgis are a bottomless pit when it comes to food. Not all of them but most.
If you are used to feeding large dogs, you will have a hard time adjusting your mind to feeding portions so small that you feel sorry for the animal.
Remember there is nothing worse for a corgi than excess weight.
Keep us posted on your search. Welcome

I'm not used to feeding animals small portions, but I am used to putting them on a diet -- our family dog we got when I was 13 was a yellow lab! After having a great dane (our first family dog) it seemed a bit mean to feed him so little, but I got used to measuring his food... and to making him go without his dinner when he stole people food off the kitchen counter. He'd stand on his hind legs to steal and eat entire loaves of bread!

I've heard about Seattle-area corgi get-togethers! I wanted to go to one last spring but I couldn't make it that day, unfortunately.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

Rachel,
Welcome! I joined a short while ago and have already learned tons. I have a hard time measuring .. we have 2 mini Doxies and a Pembroke Corgi and it never stops amazing me that they eat almost the same amount and there is a 15 plus pound difference. Ok, Harley is a bit on the chunkey side ... but I'm workin on that (she is 30 pounds) ... 2 to 3 (be like 20 pounds for us)pounds off would be perfect. I have to start a walking program if I want to live thru the Walk a thons I will be doing this spring and summer and Harley's going with me (shsh ... she don't know it yet).
I think a Corgi is a perfect choice ... any pet is work for a responsable owner soooo ...

OH yeah, I grew up in a LARGE family both in numbers and size so I have issues with cooking for 1 or 2 or 3 ... my Cooking learning was for 10 or more so ya can guess I need to learn portion control for me too. Not easy after years of conditioning but needs to be done for my health, Harley's and my Partner's health. I'm a sofftie and Harley has the PLEEEEEEASE look down as do Carmar and Seel ... I have to learn to be tough (agggghh)!!!!
