floppy ears

05-02-05 030.jpg

Picture035.jpgOne of my mix bread corgi's ears has all of the sudden gone floppy. Is this common? Maybe he ate something bad? Can cartilidge be broken while wrestling with other dogs? Anyone have any ideas?

How old is your corgi mix? If still a growing puppy, ears can flop when they grow through a teething stage. And yes cartilage can be damaged sometimes in play with other dogs, doesn't happen often, but can.

Check the thread still going on called "One Ear Up, One Ear Down" for more ideas.

floppy ears

Picture035.jpgHe is about 1 1/2 years and his ears have been up for entire time time we have had him (well over a year). He woke up this morning with both ears down, eventually his right ear straightened, but his left is still bent forward from the base. His ears were fine last night before bed.

Hard to say for sure. Have he and any of the other dogs been playing roughly? Could be the cartilage was damaged if they have.

Thanks for your concern, Debbie. Took him to the emergency vet. Vet says he had a sandbox in his ear and this is a natural reaction to an irritant. Vet cleaned and flushed it out, his ear popped right back up.

BOP! That was the sound of my palm hitting my forehead. That would do it! Memo to everyone - remember this for future reference. Yeast infections, mites, foxtails - things like that can also cause ears to drop.

Glad you found out the problem!

All my Corgis at one time or other have suddenly had an insect or bug crawl or fly into one of their ears and what do you think happened - their ear drooped in discomfort and they would shake their ear in an effort to prize out the intruder and perhaps as a signal to me to help out. But never a real floopy ear occurred.
