Two corgis, much joy!! - 05-04-2008, 05:35 PM

Hi Folks, perhaps you remember us from last year--we bought Rose our corgi and brought her home when she was only 7 weeks old, we discussed socialization problems and such. She just had her first birthday and is the most wonderful dog ever, so much that we decided to get her a dog for her birthday! We lucked out and were chosen to adopt Skye, a tri color baby just 4 months old from a shelter (Diana's Rescue) in Missouri.

Boy, talk about fun, the only thing better than having one corgi is having two. We are having just a great time. I will post pictures soon. Thanks for your encouragement, what a great breed, what loving and devoted dogs, who knew--not I, but so grateful for our 'hairy daughters'.

Sincerely, Jane, John, Rose and Skye, plus a very tolerant cat, Renie

Welcome back, Jane, John and family. Did Rosie's lumps go away? Update us on the teething lumps please?
Is Skye a male or female? Both names Rosie and Skye are great. Jane

I would assume that Jane and Co have two female Corgis since she referred to them as her "hairy daughters."

Well arn't you lucky with a rescued Corgi pup who is thriving in your very nice personal environment.

Taylor was among a dozen Corgis yesterday in our social walking club's monthly walk and he is most certainly the top gun. One of our new members has a young Pem whom she got a year ago when around a year old. Finn is rather timid and joining our club is a way of easing the timidity. It was Finns second walk excursion and he has certainly stepped up, but he knows my Taylor is boss dog and he treated Taylor as a faithful servant while he interacted with all the other Corgis as a normal playful fellow, which he is. Finn will come out of his shell much as another young Pem Corgi, a female this time, did during 2007. I think a key to gaining more confidence and less cowering is to be regularly socialised with other similar dogs and similar sized or smaller dogs.

Hi Jane Austen, that's a cool nom de plume (or your real name!!) Rose's bumps: one side has gone away--the other side is still there. We check in with our vet fairly often and his opinion still is, just keep an eye on it.

Skye is a neutered female--we had a big time of course trying to figure out her name. Her name at the shelter was Phoebe which was cute but just not us or her. We thought and thought, then came up with Lucy Skye and eventually just Skye. I really love saying it and I think that is some of the important decisions you have to make when thinking of the name for your dog, if you like the word cuz you'll be saying it often!!

I do have a question though: We are the 3rd (and final) owners of Skye. The first was a family with an 18 month old baby who thought Skye and her brother Jones were too rowdy around the baby--well duh, she is only 4 months old now; so they put them in the shelter.

She is very afraid of people--shys away when we try to pet her or put her on the leash, or move quickly around her. I am certain that she was hit at her first home--it just seems so as she is very scared around my husband.

So you corgi experts, what is the best way to help her get over her skidishness? Thanks, Jane

AW.....poor thing. It does sound like they used a heavy hand (and maybe a foot, the way it sounds) with her. Just have patience, move slow, show lots of love. It could take quite a while for her to get over it.

Chloe, our chow/corgi mix; seemed to be afraid of men when we got her. My husband would barely raise his voice and she would scrunch up like she was waiting to be hit. Talk about breaking your heart. It took her several months to come to my husband real close without coaxing. Now, she is his velcro dog when on the couch...LOL

Three corgis!!!! Oh be still my heart! I noticed just today on your Dogster page that you had acquired another bundle of joy, Bonnie.

I noticed that this one is a little girl. Are you going to start breeding them?

No and definitely no, My little girl is now 7 months old and already spayed as well as Chip & Dale are neutered. I just haven't been posting much. We have had her since she was 2 months old.
