Your grooming and cleaning him often and getting him on the path towards basic training and understanding what is required of him is also vital towards socialisation. Having family and friends playing with him is also great in making him feel comfortable among society.
Thanks for your advice which I have been following. He has been away for weekends with me and is friendly with everyone. My young grandchildren have been playing with him when we visit so that helps with the children part. The only dog so far has been my brothers lab puppy who is 6 months old. They love to play but I cannot let Toby off the leash as sometime it gets to rough and that way I can have some control over them. I brush him and massage his paws every day and even though I have to supply him with treats to make him sit still it is getting better, I enjoy reading your threads and this site has been very helpful. Any help you can give in quieting the barking when I tell him to shush would be appreciated. That is my next step. I live on 2nd floor apt so right now I have to carry him up and down the stairs,. I ready that you stated they should not do stairs until 6 months and he is only 4 months. I have showed him how to go up the steps and usually he will do the last 3 on his own.

Sharon - this is all great advice. I know that I started handling all parts of Jackie as soon as I brought her home, and it has made a BIG difference. Other dog owners comment to me all the time that they can't believe she lets me brush her teeth, touch her feet, etc. And socialization is key. He needs lots of positive experiences with as many new places, people, things, (friendly) DOGS as possible. General rule - bring him anywhere and everywhere that dogs are allowed. I have even brought Jackie into the post office (no sign saying "No Dogs Allowed", so I figured that was good enough for me! ), and had my husband walk her around outside stores where she is not allowed inside while I am shopping. You meet lots of people that way, and encounter new sights / sounds / activity that he will not get exposed to at home.
THANKS FOR THE GREAT ADVICE. I HAVE BEEN TAKING HIM WITH ME ON WEEKENDS VISITING SO HE IS MEETING MANY PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. HE PLAYS WITH MY BROTHERS LAB PUPPY WHO IS 6 MONTHS BUT I HAVE TO CONTROL THEM AS SOMETIMES IT GETS TOO ROUGH. I ALSO BRUSH HIM AND MASSAGE HIS PAWS AND PADS DAILY SO HE IS USED TO HANDLING THEM. I AM SILL WORKING ON THIS BECAUSE I NEED TREATS STILL TO KEEP HIM STILL. HE IS 15 WKS OLD. HE HAS LEARNED TO SIT WHEN I GIVE HIM TREAT, FEED HIM OR LEASH HIM TO GO OUT. KNOWS THE WORD OUT AND WILL BARK WHEN I ASK HIM IF HE WANTS TO GO OUT. SO I THINK WE HAVE A GOOD START ON HIS TRAINING. WORKING ON MAKING HIM STOP BARKING WHEN I SAY HUSH. HE GETS IN SPLURTS WHEN HE WILL START BARKING AND WILL NOT STOP UNTIL I GET THE WATER BOTTLE TO SQUIRT HIM. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

There is a whole following of dog people at our Starbucks, especially on weekends. You might want to get one of the dog leashes that has an adjustable snap at the end you hold because it's great for tieing the dog to a table, a post, chair, or whatever. I got mine at Petco. (It is NOT one of those retractable leashes) This board is a great bunch of people so feel free to ask about anything. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE. I AM GOING TO LOOK FOR THE LEASH YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT ALTHOUGH I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY SO WE DO NOT HAVE VERY MANY STORES CLOSE BY THAT I COULD TAKE HIM. STILL WOULD BE HANDY TO HAVE. WE HAVE BEEN DOING ALOT OF TRAVELING ON WEEKENDS AND HE IS A REAL TROOPER SO FAR.

Hi Sharon
I'm pleased to see that you are learning alot and puting into action some of the ideas you have gained from GoCorgi members.
I wouldn't think massaging Toby's feet is better than other places - such as the muscles at the top of his legs. But if he enjoys a foot massage - why not as long as you don't squeeze his feet too hard because Corgis do not like their feet squeezed and squashed.

Better not to even let him climb the last three steps until he is a couple of months older- especially if he is not been given calcium as a supplement.

N the contrary, I'm looking after a six-seven month old Corgi for a few weeks and it will be interesting to see if he can climb up and down the four sets of stairs/steps that are part of my house.

A thread on Go Corgi is currently dealing with a barking issue. Pehaps you can find it by doing a search on 'advance search' in typing in the word 'barking.' If it is no help for you get back to us with the problem. Dogs/Corgis should talk but not too much or too loud too often.

Congratulations!

You are on a wonderful journey, and have selected the BEST BREED! I've never owned a dog until 3 years ago, when I was blessed with Rowdy. He's such a good dog, funny, smart, happy, sweet, I could go on and on. In a nutshell, he's a joy to have around. When he was a puppy, I took him EVERYWHERE....even to work for 6 weeks. I too wanted him to be very social and to be my companion as at the time, I was single. I literally went NOWHERE without him, I live in a small town, on Saturdays, we'd walk downtown, and he was welcome in some stores, I took him to the park to see small children...again....EVERYWHERE. He learned very quickly and behaved very well. I did go to obedience training with him since I had no clue what to do with a dog, it was helpful. Good luck and enjoy your life with your sweetie.
