Hi, I'm new and i was wondering if anyone had a corgi as old as mine. He will be 14 in June, still in really good shape, but he's been haviing a lot of stomach troubles lately. Vet says he just has sensitive stomach, does anyoone know if this is normal?

Cowboy's mom,

Welcome. What is your Corgis name?

I had a Pem that passed away this past December at the age of approx 13 1/2 and she had stomach problems for the past two years. She suffered from Pancreatitis quite often - sometimes, not always vomiting food but yellow flem stuff and her stomach would gurgle expecially in the early morning.

For her my vet recommended that I feed her a late meal before bed about 10 p.m.(about 1/4) cup of food which helped cut down the production of bile during her sleeping hours.(this did help),

Also, she took over the counter Pepsid AC twice a day - a small dose(you would have to ask your vet about that) This helped settle down the acid production in her stomach. She also took something called Metaclopromide(not sure that is spelled right) once in awhile which helped with the motility of her gut.

When she had her bouts of pancreatitis, I fed her canned Science Hill ID which she was able to tolerate well.

Bring these options up to your vet and see what he/she says. I hope you can find some tummy relief for your dog. Not fun for the dog and not fun for you to watch.

Linda

Cowboy the Corgi... - 08-11-2006, 11:23 AM

Cowboy turned 13 on June 19, 2006, so in 2007 he will be 14. We took him in a couple of months ago for basically the same problem, and that's when they told us he had a sensitive stomach. While we were there, the vet told us to start feeding him Hills Science Diet I/D, so we did. That is just his wet food though, for dry food he eats Nutro Max for Senior's. Corgimom, you are describing exactly what Cowboy has been going through. Sometimes he doesn't vomit food at all, but just bile. I was trying to avoid a costly vet bill, if it was just a sensitive belly again, but I'm going to make an appointment for him next week and definately ask her about the Pepcid. I want him to feel as good as possible in his old age, and I hate the thought of him being uncomfortable. Thank you corgimom and Corgimum for replying!

Cowboys mom

Yes, it is regular strength Pepcid AC over the counter and the smallest dose is the 10 mg tablet. - Your vet can tell you what he would recommend for his
daily dose and it may require you cutting the tablet in half.

Also, ask about giving him a bit to eat later at night. For instance, if he goes
to bed around 11 p.m, then I would offer him a bit to eat around 10:30 which
should help his tummy upsets.

Also, they have Dry Science Hill ID also

Hope his tummy feels better soon. Good luck

Linda
