*~* I have 2 sister 10 month old Pembroke Corgi puppies. Their names are: Midnight & Sunshine. I got 2 because they seemed so attached to eachother. They are great friends and very affectionate toward eachother. I am very fortunate and happy to have Midnight & Sunshine in my life. WELCOME Scotchyroo, Jemima & Pete. *~* Nikki

I have a three year old red/white Pem named Taylor. And I must be suffering from over-anxiety.
Two nights ago around 9pm, Taylor yelled out that someone or something was prowling around in the back of our property. So I let him out and he ran around anxiously so I turned the light on in the Conservatory and left the Conservatory door to the outside open. And left Taylor to deal with the intruder/s. Around two hours later, no Taylor and no response to my calls or the flashlight. God, I though, he's gone up into the bush and got lost or worse, eaten possum bait poison. I'm going to have a sleepless night. Then decided to check the front of the house and there was Taylor, sitting by the front door, silent as usual. He must have wormed his way under a fence, got into a neighbour's property and raced along the footpath to home. What does this incident tell me. A number of things, not least: don't underestimate your Corgi - they usually will take the safe option and look for home base. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 08-21-2006 at 03:06 AM. |

Michael:
I have to ask! Why on earth would you turn your corgi loose if you thought there was some type of intruder in your yard and then wait for 2 hours to check on him? Especially if there are that type of dangers lurking around. A possum is a formidable opponent to say the least and bait poison must mean certain death. You are absolutely right - never underestimate your Corgi but the second part of the safe option is not always correct. Sometimes, they can't find home base or they have wandered to far off to find their way home or something has gotten in their way so they can't get home. Taylor did a fine job alerting you to the fact that something was in your backyard and it was nice of you to turn the light on for him, however, his job was done once he made you aware of the intruder and your job should have begun to find out what it was and left Taylor in the house where he was safe while you did it. I would never put my Chip in jeopardy if I thought something was in my backyard or wait for 2 hours to check on him. Maybe NZ is different than the Good ole US of A but the many dangers are the same.

BONNIE: I've lived in this property for nearly four years now and never seen a Possum - the poison has killed them off but it must have been a cat or a bird that Taylor heard. Anyway, the bush is a huge area and Taylor has access to it but he knows he is not allowed up into it past a fence line. As well, in normal circumstances, Taylor does not chase cats or any other ground animal let alone a possum. NZ possum's are not vicious - I use to feed a lot of mothers and their babies when I lived in another part of the Hutt Valley and I had to pick up qiuite a few when they decided to come in the house even though at that time I had another Corgi who was not as acccommidating as Taylor. However Taylor does sometimes scamper after birds in his property ( birds as opposed to ducks and geese). Any poison bait is well up into the bush and tree laden hill and well away from my property. But it can still pose a problem in ones mind when a llittle Corgi goes (apparantly) missing. I have great faith in Corgis that they will prove more than a handful to any cat or possum ( they re actually called opossum in NZ and they are a native animal of Australia)). We did have a pet rabbit ho was also a strong rabbit who didn't hesitate to bite if he felt threatened and all Taylor wanted to do was for the rabbit to chase him - which happened a lot when Taylor was a pup.
But Bonnie, you might have a point. We are relatively close to the fastest growing industry in the Hutt Valley - a men's prison. And I suppose it could have been an escaped prisoner who ventured into the pitch blackness of the rear of our property. But if it was a human, Taylor's yelling would be different - because he is a people greeter. And once we had a large, mean looking dog in out back property - he or she had come up through the tracing the stream and Taylor really objected to its presence - to such a degree that the mean looking dog high-tailed it back into the water and away it went.
