Chewing problem

Hello, I am Coopersmom and I love dogs, well most animals, but especially dogs. I have had a variety of breeds and mixes through the years. I adopted my first Corgi about 6 years ago. She was 3 years old when I adopted her. I got Cooper, my second Corgi, when she was just 13 weeks old. She is now 16 months old. I love her dearly. She does have a problem with chewing - my furniture and some shoes. She gets different sizes, shapes, and flavors of rawhide chews as well as nylabones for aggressive chewers. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

thank you for your help.

I second what T-Gal just said. Cody was somewhat of a chewer when we first got him and I used the bitter apple spray. I know some dogs like to chew table legs, etc, but I was lucky that I didn't have that problem. Once in a while he will chew on his wicker toy basket and I have sprayed the areas with bitter apple and he left it alone.

I don't hardly use the spray as much as before, but on the occasions that I do, it has worked for me.

I guess I would also work on a "leave it" command every time you catch her doing that, and redirecting her to an appropriate item that she may have.

I agree with using the bitter apple. Our corgi is almost seven months. Ace is a BIG chewer and the spray stopped him from chewing our kitchen cabinets! He doesn't get our shoes because I make it a point to pick them up and put them away. (Once I was babysitting for a friend and the little girl took her shoes off. I didn't think anything of it until I noticed Ace was being VERY good. He found the shoes and chewed right through them in 2 minutes flat!!!) We have to get heavy duty toys ,no more cute stuffed toys because they don't make it through the day. Ace loves the nylabone teething keys (the big ones!) and he just loves bully sticks! We learned about them on this forum and they have saved our house!!! He would rather chew the bully stick than anything else. You can get the bully sticks at Petsmart.

Jim & Bethany,

I wished Cody liked Bully sticks, I tried them with him and it was a no go, but I have heard from lots of others like yourself, whose dogs like them. I used to give Cody pigs ears earlier on but then they started giving diarrhea so I have discontinued those.

Maybelle is our chewer. She especially loves the chair rungs, corner of my china cabinet, sheetrock - need I say more. Chip and her are monkey see monkey do so Chip started chewing things also. The bitter apple saved my house and furniture. They didn't even taste of it, just smelled it and that is all it took. I cannot give them the rawhide chews because Chip swallows big chunks of them and I am afraid he will get sick or worse case scenerio a blockage.

*~* IGNORANT...I am. Explain: bully stick...you will ??
( I am a Star Wars...nut !! sorry...LOVE Yoda !! )

You mentioned the bully stick.
Please, explain what it is...of course, I figure that it is a chew toy...but, would you go into more detail for me ?

Midnight & Sunshine did not play with the Kong. Waste of money.... I gave them to my neighbor.
They also DO NOT like the Nylabone....anymore.

I just give them Pig Skin Twists. They look like cigars...kinda. They LOVE them.

{ Linda (corgimom)...Midnight got sick (puked !!) from the rawhide bone one day...so, NO MORE....NO WAY !! }

Thank you all for your advise for my chewing Cooper. I plan to try the Bitter Apple. Hope it works. Currently Cooper spends her time in her kennel when I am at work. She is otherwise well mannered and I don't really like leaving her in the kennel. I am so glad I found this site. I love the pictures, I love reading about other Corgis and their families. Corgis are the best.

Monty's breeder warned us not to give rawhide or pigs ears. She said that either of them could be choked on, or become impacted as well.

...ummm, in our house, Bitter Apple was a tasty condiment which we applied to the kitchen chair legs for Chloe's chewing enjoyment!! We found that Tabasco Sauce was more effective for her inapporpriate gnawing - HOWEVER, it STAINS!! At 16 months old we still don't completely trust her, but she is doing so MUCH better that we feel comfortable leaving her out of her crate when we leave the house for short periods of time. Her favorite TOYS to chew are regular Nylabones...I confess to being very nervous about giving her rawhide or anything she can actually ingest - mostly because she is a heavy chewer and a "gulper"...

It may take some experimentation to discover something that Cooper doesn't like enough to discourage him from chewing things he isn't supposed to! Our previous dog HATED horseradish!!

Nikki - Answer.....you will get.
Okay, we had no idea what a bully stick was until we found gocorgi! As funny as it may sound a bully stick is 100% real bull penis. It is completely digestable and does not splinter off like rawhides. Ace just loves them. He is chewing on one as I'm typing this!!

We're big Star Wars fans as well!

Chewing Problem

We adopted our male Pembroke, Gizmo, from our local humane society shelter at the age of 3 1/2. They warned us that he was an agressive chewer. He is now 5, and interestingly, he never chews inappropriately! We keep his toy box loaded. He loves kongs, and we have a variety of them. We have found that the best toys are the ones made from fire hose material. We have been buying them at Petco (the larger ones are best), but I just ordered a bunch from Upco, and they were much less expensive. We also found that some of the Bamboo Combat-tested toys are good for him, although he seems to be getting better at taking them apart. I ordered them from drugstore.com, and their prices are good. Also PetEdge has some rubber tire toys that are practivally indestructible. I hope this helps.
