Ace is definately a chewer. Has been since day one and I don't see him growing out of it. He doesn't chew the furniture but kitchen walls and cabinets are another story! Lately he has decided to chew on the baby gate when we leave him for awhile. We have gone through so many toys I can't believe it. He chews them, I sew the ears and heads back on, he chews them off again! On the up side, my stitching has greatly improved! Bully sticks have saved our house. Ace can chew a 12" stick in one day.
When Jim and I went on a short trip this summer, my in-laws stayed at our house to watch Ace. Somehow Ace was able to knock over the baby gate (twice) when they were out. The whole house was his for the taking and he decides to go after my helpless plant. He chewed that sucker down to nothing! (It was about 3 ft. high) He attacked the plant both times! The plant is now recovering on the back patio! It is about 6" high now! |

Sassy has never been a destructive chewer. She loves her rawhides but one time she has been left alone she did chew up 2 sets of MY tennis shoes, one of each pair and did not touch my husbands shoes which were sitting right beside mine, but Sassy is not left home alone much as I work from home and my husband is disabled so she generally goes with us or one of us stays home. She is a spoiled little girl, but so cute and easy to do.

I have found what works best with Zak and any stuffed toys - - I remove ALL the filling, and he has a blast with the outer shell of the toy and doesn't chew on aything after the filling is out. He used to chew up all his toys like crazy - and like you, I couldn't keep up with the sewing because as soon as I gave a toy back to him, he'd chew something else. he was just chewing to get to the filling. Besides, I feel safedr leaving him with his toys while I am away after the "squeaker" has been taken out.

Well - I came home from an auction today and Maybelle was outside and I found a big hole in my linoleum so I guess I know who the culprit is. Looks like I will be getting new linoleum after the chewing stops.

Nah.. we haven't had problems with him chewing parts of the house for a while now, mostly that was just when he was really young and was left alone for any amount of time. Now I am home most all the time (thought it looks like I'm going to have to go back to work soon
) and he is in his crate when I am not at home so it isn't a problem. Sometimes he just likes to carry something in from outside and chew on it in the comfort of the living room. I don't mind those so much because I can monitor to make sure he isn't trying to swallow the pieces (he never does) and then I can just pick it all up and throw it away.-Cheryl |

Linda,
The firehose toys are wonderful. That has been the only toy that Darci hasnt killed in minutes. Darci and Egan neither one are very bad chewers, except for their toys that they kill in about 20 or 30 minutes. Egan likes one small spot of carpet that has got him in trouble but other than that, thats it.

I love all the stories about chewing. Thanks, guys. I better count my blessings that Zak has only been fond of chewing the braiding around my throw rugs and one spot in the hall way. I just pray he doesn't find a "new" attraction.
I haven't been able to get him to go into a crate. His original owners kept him crated 24 hrs./day - except for 3 daily walks because there was an older corgi that terrorized Zak. Hence, when I tried to start training him to go into a crate, he paniced and ran into the bedroom and under the bed. He would never go near the crate again. |

Eileen,
I have a neighbor going through the same thing in regards to the crate. She got a rescue dog about 2 months ago and apparently this dog was crated all the time. She hates the crate and puts a big stink up when put into it; so my neighbor tries to do it as little as possible. Instead, she puts her in the first floor bathroom when running errands. |

Well, Dillon has never once chewed on ANYTHING of ours. We have leather couches, there is wood molding, an oriental rug but nothing. He is 14 months old now and he has not once chewed on anything that is not his. He has a berber ball slumber ball in the living room and has his soft crate in the bedroom..which he loves. we were going to let him sleep with us and while he will lay in bed with us for a little while, within an hour he jumps off our bed and puts himself in his crate ( and then i zip him up inside) he has a memory foam orthopedic mattress inside and his own special fleece blanket incase he gets chilly or wants to snuggle up to something...and he has never ripped any of that apart. Is he completely abnormal?
Now, lets talk about his toys...berber toys get chewed apart in minutes...i bought a whole display ( 80 toys in total) of zannies berber toys in a lot of different animal shapes and colors so he can destroy as many as he wants whenever he wants. Any plush toy is destroyed in minutes and he will destuff them completely. I got him a crackler skunk toy made by fatcat inc and that tough material was no match for him, it was earless in 10 minutes and had part of a leg ripped off. I dont give him rawhide as he tends to choke on it and if he does successfully eat it, he gets constipated followed by the runs, so no rawhide for my guy. I give him kongs, and granola filled beef shin bones ( wowser's granola bones) and while he has to start them outside on the deck ( they are sticky on the outside) within 10 minutes he can come in the house and eat his bone without making the house a mess. He loves these bones and they last a while with him... I got him the fire hose toys and he did not destroy that quickly- it took him a long time to wreck it. I got him the tough toys by ruff dog- he has not been able to destroy that. But it is a catch 22, if it is easy to rip apart he loves it, if he can't rip a toy apart, it soon becomes not fun for him.... with the exception of the squeaker tennis balls and football ( his favorite toy ever). Cody is like your Dillon, just chews on his toys. You got Dillon 80 different toys
an idea...do you sew??? Buy the Berber in the fabric store or the fleece, even the canvas material. - much cheaper; and just sew the fabric into a square(2 sides together) and then turn inside out and slipstitch the ends shut - and Dillon won't care if it is in the shape of a bone or anything for that matter....if it is just the feel of the material that he seems to like(in regards to the Berber) You could add stuffing if you like and also a squeaker to the fleece or Canvas ones to give them some loft. The Berber, you really could just leave as is. Or... you could sew the berber into a long tube and knot both ends - that way they can chew and whip them around and when destroyed, just throw them out - still much cheaper than buying the already made animals. That is what I now plan on doing. you could make several of these out of one yard of fabric probably for almost the cost of one or maybe two already made animals; and in different colors if you would prefer Of course, you probably still want to give him some fabric animal that makes neat sounds The firehose toys are very good - got one from Petco. |
