it's so sad she is such an active dog..But we'll be looking at FHO surgery in the next few months to ensure her quality of life..till then we're going to get her to swim as much as possible and get het as slim and trim as possible!!Any guys out there whose dog has had the op?? Advice please! |

She'll be on drug treatment for the next 6 months till she is fully grown, taking two drugs Previcox and Fortiflex which help with pain and inflamation..She said the biggest mistake we can make is to limit her exersize too much as the muscles need to be strong for the FHO. it's a tricky one, not too much exersize but you don't want her picking up weight either that just compounds the problem..

http://www.workingdogs.com/vchipdysplasia.htm http://www.thepetcenter.com/xra/hd.html I found these links for you with some info; You probably already know this. Did you contact the person you got your dog from to let them know about the situation? Last edited by corgimom; 09-29-2006 at 06:49 AM. |

Welcome to the site! I wish that you joined purely for fun, but we are glad to help in any way we can. I hope that things turn out well for Myfanwy - she's a beauty, by the way.

Braam - how traumatic for you and for McFanwy. If you got your Corgi from a reputable breeder there should be some major comeback for you.
Hip Dysplasia can clearly show out at a young age or years down the track. It is probably best you know now so that treatment can be more effective. McFanwy needs to build up her strength and muscles and the best way to do this without increasing her exercising time - in fact she could do less - is in taking her regularly (three-four times a week) up steepish hills and steps - but not letting her run or race around freely but keeping to your walking pace and sticking to the track. I'll make some enquiries here in NZ and see what I can find out for you. Corgis are not one of the breeds where HD is a common enough curse. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 10-02-2006 at 01:50 AM. |
