Help!!! - 10-04-2006, 10:06 PM

Chico, is going on 8 months old . So I am hoping this is the puppy stage he is going through. Do Corgi's try to eat everything in sight? he tires to eat sticks, bugs, plastic, rubber, everything he can get his little mouth on, he has to be watched constantly. Just wondering if this is a normal trait of this breed??? He's not hungry...... just a little mess!!!

It is normal for puppies to try to eat things they shouldn't. This is where you come in with trying to make sure that he doesn't get ahold of the wrong stuff.

Do you have the time to participate with Chico in a puppy class? He is at a good age to start. My suggestion is when you find that he is chewing on something tht he shouldn't be, remove the object and at the same time say
"drop it" and redirect him to some toy that he can have. Teaching him the
"leave it" command would also be helpful and puppy class can also help you with that.

Of course, we can't watch our dogs 24/7 and they will get into things every now and then, but keep your eye on what he is putting in his mouth.

At eight months, it is not usual for a Corgi to want to eat into everything. Having said that, some Corgis of course are not as discerning as they could be at any age. I looked after a problem Corgi for two weeks quite recently and he was seven months old at the time, and he ate everything he could grab - lunch wrapping paper, the lot. He was not your usual Pem Corgi in this regard but it was related to his relationship difficulties with his elderly owner.
With my Taylor, I just have to say "leave" or "arh arh"- and he leaves. Or "oooh" and he trots away from what he was smelling. And he doesn't like the taste of sticks - so he is no fetcher. All my Pems I have had have been quite fussy to very fussy once they got out of the early puppy stages where exploring and sampling things are the most important aspects of life.

Chip is almost 9 months old and he still will steal goose poop or dead fishworms along the way on a walk if I am not watching him closely. He also will chew sticks, etc when he gets a chance. I had thought he would have outgrown that by now but it is worse since his surgery. I think he is going through a second puppyhood before completing his first.

Chloe is 18 months old and will eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in her path if not constantly monitored. She has plenty of appropriate toys, enough to eat at meals, and DOES NOT lack attention !! It actually is a scary situation because I am constantly concerned for her safety!!...when we go for walks I survey our path to be sure nothing hazzardous is in our way - when at home I still "puppy-proof" as I have taken twist-ties and bobby pins out of her mouth !! I use a VERY stern voice when I say "DROP IT!" or ""LEAVE" but the cat poop out in the yard must be SOOOO tasty that she never misses an opportunity to "scarf"...We have a tie-out line in the backyard but I seldom put her out on it because I don't trust her not to eat the mushrooms that are proliferating everywhere... I wish I could offer some advice but I, too, am in need of HELP!!

Jemma is 8 months and I'm having the same issue - she particularly likes chewed gum off the sidewalk. We live down the street from a junior school, so we end up with a lot of food garbage on our lawns. I think that Rupe and Jem think life is a buffet - not a cabaret!

I was going to write my own reply . . . but I would just be saying everything Margo said above. Jackie is a fluffy little Hoover.

We are very careful to watch where we are walking, and not let Jackie get anything. My dog walker, on the other hand, is not so discerning. I got a call on Tuesday that Jackie had eaten one of those small plastic jelly containers (like the ones you get at the diner). It came out this morning, thank God. But this is the 2nd time I have gotten one of these calls form my walker, and I am thinking she needs to be replaced.

Sorry to concur, but Mazie is 9-1/2 months and seems like she always has something in her mouth. In the house it is any type of paper product - tissue, toilet paper, newspaper - and she goes searching for it in the trash cans...

The worst was a big, fat, live grasshopper that she got a hold of last month ...I had to leave her in the backyard because it was grossing me out. She must have played with that thing for a half an hour...she liked to toss it in the air over and over again.

Cody is not a big chewer, but my teens often throw leftover food or the wrappers from food in their garbage cans in their bedrooms. Cody has a way of sniffing the food and wrappers out and enjoys munching on what he can find. I usually catch him though, and then I have to be the mean mom and take it away

Rhys, as a younger pup, used to eat everything! He slowly started becoming more discriminating - he stopped trying to eat rocks first - and he has been slowly progressing.

He still loves paper, bugs, mulch, and bird poop, though. Yuck.

Well, I think we are finding that many of us have Corgis that like sticks, cat poop, rabbit poop, grass clumps, grasshoppers, worms, leftover food, wrappers and everything inbetween. Does this mean we have bad relationships with our dogs? Many of them seem to eat this stuff when we are not looking. I think we all need to get to the bottom of why are Corgis are behaving in these dog like ways.

I guess we should all be making appointments with the dog psychologists; would they provide a couch for both of us?

Michael, thank heavens you don't have cats because Taylor just might find those droppings heavenly
