Hello My Name Is
Hello, My name is Phyllis. I have a Tri Corgi who is 21 months old. We are active in agility and try obedience. However my corgi , Alli, barks non stop at all classes, obedience or agility. She only barks at home at strange sounds. Anyone have any suggestions? It is annoyingto everyone else .

Hello Phyllis and Alli
Welcome to Go Corgi My name is Linda and my Pem Boy Cody is 11 months old. Would love to see some pictures of Alli. You have come to the right place here because we all definitely love corgis. Not sure what to tell you in regards to the barking, but I think some other people will have good suggestions for you. The forum can be a bit slow on weekends at times, but keep checking back, the activity will pick up.

Barking is ok for agility but it is not on for obedience. A lot of dogs bark excitedly - especially the Border Collie type dogs - whilst doing agility - but it can be a problem if the dog barks and loses the plot ie the dog talks over the top of instructions or at the expense of concentrating at training or during a competition event. My Taylor only barks in agility when he thinks I have led him astray or not made the required actions for him to perform, clear enough (and that bark is only saying " what are you doing/telling me, mate?").
I wouldn't be concerned if Alli is annoying other agility handlers - that's just the way it goes - but if his barking is affecting his performances, then you will need to be very firm in indicating to him to quiten down. And I suggest you do this using similar methods to other forms of agility training - praise and reward when Alli complies. Otherwise, just let him air his enjoyment and excitability as much as he wants to. But his obedience competition days are probably over. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 10-08-2006 at 02:05 AM. |

Oh my goodness but Corgis BARK!!!! They love to bark, and are known for their forceful barking. I have found that treats work in the short term, but goodness.. keeping a corgi from barking is like trying to seperate them from the very idea of Corginess. They just feel obligated to warn you about everything, or else they're just talking. Perhaps we should just try and change the competition rules. A quiet corgi is most certainly a gift from heaven and an aberration from the norm.

I think I am right in saying that Corgis are not usually barking dogs in agility ciompetitions. Being noisy and talkative in their home environment doesn't often relate to a Corgi being noisy elsewhere. I have attended countless conformation shows and the Corgis are generally pretty quiet - great ring manners and seldom noisy outside the ring.

She never even tried to bark. So even though I am on my second Corgi, I am for the first time enjoying all the unique sounds that a Corgi makes and really enjoying it

Welcome to the Board. That is what I do with Chip when he barks is tell him hush and occupy him with something else. It works but Chip is not what I would call a barker. At obedience class, he just talks when he first goes in to let everyone know that he has arrived and they can start the class. LOL

I am curious about this barking thing, I have 4 doggies at home & whenever someone shows up near our main gate, all of them will bark & 3 of them will run to the gate to check it out...Buta will bark but she will not get out of the house. Mum says she is like the barking manager
, as she is always the first to hear something LOL & she sort of starts the barking but will only stand at the stairs while all the rest runs out. How is it with your corgis??
