All I know is I am going home tonight, parting my hair, and applying Tucker's K-9Advantix to me. (I'm kidding of course!)
I got bit by my first tick this morning. Ick!!!! I pulled it out w/ tweezers and got all of it but it hurts! It's like a nonstop bee sting. I called my GP first thing, they told me to bring the tick in (I had flushed it....), and got a prescription for tetracyclyn for 7 days. Then another MD appointment in 7 days to be tested. I live in a pretty prevalent area for deer ticks but have always used K-9Advantix on Tucker. And I've never seen a tick before. Lulu got sent home from the Vet w/ Frontline instead of Advantix so I used it on her. I just ordered 4 motnhs of Advantix for her from Foster's and Smith. Maybe I'll start using Buddy wash in my shower and spritzing myself w/ Buddy Spray!!!! (I love the Cloud Star products) Pretty sad when I get bit by the tick and dogs don't. Not fair!

Yup, I've got the ring. And now it's feeling more like a burn and less like a bee sting. Wish I didn't have so much to do at the office... I'd milk this for a sick day!!!!!! Take my two hoodlums our for a hike in the fall leaves.

And no, I can't remember what one is not safe around cats. Frontline is okay per my vet today, but he gave me another name(not advantix) that you would not want to use around cats, and I can't remember what it was...Bio spot - something like that??? |

K-9 Advantix is the stuff that is toxic to cats. I don't have cats and my dogs don't interact w/ cats much. I've always worried about getting a tick bite but now I know: you'll feel it when it bites! This bugger really hurt!
This weekend I have serious leaf raking and brush piling to do. Firtunstely it's supposed to be only 50 degrees. So ling pants and long sleeves and socks (!) here I come!

Was talking with my vet yesterday and he said he has had four clients just this week whose dogs had bad flee infestation. In each case the owner was only giving their dogs "garlic tablets" as a preventative.
He said he doesn't understand that, but some owners insist on it, but he doesn't think that is a good idea. |

Well - as i mentioned before, lots of garlic is also supposed to keep the mosquitos from biting, but i eat a TON of garlic, everything other than breakfast has garlic in it ( unless it is eggs, and then yep, I have eaten garlic in my scrambled eggs or omlettes) and the mosquitos eat me alive.
I know biospot is sold for cats too, though one of the shop cats at a petshop that i go to here and there for food, had a very bad reaction to it and got a open wound infection from the site where it was applied, he lost all his hair, and has been on antibiotics and the like for 4 wks and finally it has scabbed over, but no hair back on his shoulders yet...very scarey stuff.... Chip has started itching again so I gave him a bath last night in some real nice oatmeal shampoo. Low and behold, I found a flea. I just put frontline plus on him again about 3 to 4 weeks ago so I will have to wait a little while before applying it again. Does anyone use the frontline plus monthly. I feel sorry for poor Chip, if he has one flea, he is itching like crazy. Frontline is the only thing I have found that will kill the fleas.

i use front line top spot monthly - i have no ill effect with Dillon, and i have never seen a flea on him... the ticks are another story, they dont usualy bite him, i am very through in removing all the ones crawling on him after a romp in the woods, but the ones that have remained on him tend not to bite him, he has been bitten once, last year, i freaked out and got him lyme disease preventative shots

Fleas are really bad this year. I have been fighting with them all summer it seems like. Chip will only get just one or two towards the end of each month. I think he may pick them up at Obedience class. The rest of my dogs don't seem to have them although I treat them also. Gets very expensive. The Ticks we have in TN don't carry Lyme disease (or at least I don't think they do) but I remember the NY ones. Chip is vaccinated for Lyme disease. Ticks weren't bad here this year.

I use Frontline Plus on a monthly and just yesterday found a tick on Koda just 2 days beofre he was do for his monthly dose. The tick had bitten him but had also died probably shortly after biteing him. I could not get the head out so I took him to the vet who was only able to get half of the head with great difficulty. The vet even went as far as making a small incision by the bite to try and get the head but was not able to get the whole thing out. The vet told me that I don't really have to worry about Lyme Disease becuase the tick has to get the size of a grape before they can contract Lyme disease. This was not my normal vet as I was not at home should I get a second opinion on putting him on Lyme dieseas medication?

I was told by the people from frontline that the tick must be attached for three days before lyme disease can be spred- and their product kills the tick within 2 days, so your pet wont get lyme disease.. Personally that was not a good enough answer for me and i got the lyme disease preventative shot- i think it was a two series shot once a year...It may be "over kill" but i have met people who have lost pets to complications from lyme disease and i dont want to risk it with my sweet dillon.
Poor Koda, that sounds awful, i hate Ticks they are really eww! Emilie |
