Out for a while.
I am heading out for Kansas City, MO this morning for a week to go take my son to see his great-grandmother (who raised me) and his Aunt and Grandpa and just about every great-aunt and second cousin he has LOL. Anyhow....hubby is staying home to watch over the dogs (okay, really he's staying because the military wouldn't let him have any leave, but that's a different rant!). See you all back in a week!

Yay.. I'm back. We had a great trip and my son is very thorougly spoiled now. It's gonna take me several days to convince him that he really can be put down without wilting away!
Anyhow... we got good news while I was gone also... our house sold!! Now we have until Nov 21st to find an apartment that will take dogs (we already have a good one picked, just have to apply and hope they have something available) and finish moving so I'll be quite busy for a while! Once we get that all taken care of we will be putting in for orders to move to a new Base. Exciting stuff! So... I'll be around on gocorgi but my attendance could be less frequent as we're trying to get moved and such. YAY! -Cheryl Last edited by Checkers; 10-26-2006 at 09:02 AM. |

Cheryl, that's good news for you. What branch is your husband in? My dad was in the Navy, but we only lived in 3 places: Scotland, Maryland, and Texas.
Is Checkers too young to have moved before? |

Hubby is in the Air Force. We are actually going to try for an overseas assignment next.. and yes, we will take Checkers with us for sure. He's never had to move before but I have done a lot of socialization and especially car rides of all lengths to make sure it wasn't too much of a shock for him. I'm sure he won't care much for apartment life where he'll have to be on leash all the time instead of in his fenced yard... but he'll get used to it. There are also some good parks around that I can take him to for games of fetch, etc. so that is nice.

Cheryl,
You might check out England. My son, his Ex and Leah lived in Mildenhall England near the C130 & Fighter Jet Bases for 3 years. It had very nice off base housing and a great little park for the children. Plus the villages were pretty, all the castles to visit and only a train ride away from London! He really liked the way that base was run.

Make sure you check the quarantine regulations for the country you are going to. When we moved to Guam our Shih Tzu had to stay in a quarantine facility at our cost for 120 days. His cell as I called it was concrete and chain line it was about 5' tall, 6' long and 3' wide with a raised area for his crate to stay on. We visited him everyday and had to flea and tick dip him weekly although the owners of the facility chemical cleaned weekly and water sprayed when they found a dog had gone potty. He did relatively well except he ulcerated his eyes by rubbing them on the concrete which eventually caused him to go blind. His quality of like was great until we had to put him to sleep at the age of 16 due to Heart Failure. I will never regret taking to Guam, just wish there was a better way to quarantine.

I actually found this info on the internet for Cheryl to read; it sounds like the pet has to go through a series of things and wait here 6 months before being allowed in; but this is if going to the UK http://www.slowtrav.com/uk/planning/pets.htm http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quar...pets/index.htm Last edited by corgimom; 10-26-2006 at 05:04 PM. |

Thanks for the tips. I'm sure there will probably be a quarantine... and that is a bridge we will cross when we get to it. I think Checkers' youth will help him to bounce back from any trauma associated with it though. We had considered adding a puppy to the family but are going to wait until we find out if we are going overseas first so we don't have to put two dogs through that. We are most likely looking at Germany, Italy or Alaska. Unfortunately, my husband's career field right now does not go to England or we would have put it on the list as well. This is all speculation atm anyhow since we may not even get any of our requested stations. We'll play it by ear and do what we need to do when the time comes.
