The Queen
I don't know if this has been kicked around yet...
I am in Manhattan on business for s few days (Corgis happily playing at the Pet Sitters!). In rural upstate NY The Queen (w/ Helen Mirren, one of my favorite actresses!) has not played yet and I wasn't willing to wait and see if it ever made it. So I caught a matinee of The Queen today. Hate to say it but the Black Labs got as much screen time as the Corgis. Anyhow, it was an interesting movie. Tony Blair was protrayed as very bright, gutsy, loyal, and sensative. It made me think how impressed I have been with him as a political figure. I know there is another thread about the vote this week which pointed out how politics isn't exactly the best thread on boards like this. That being said, I hope Mr. Blair survives hitching his wagon to that of the US President. Back to Corgi content.... I found it very unrealistic: In the final seen the one Corgi only jumped on Blair's charachter once! Mine would have been swapping spit, shedding Corgi fur all over the poor guy. Then the dogs continued their cute trot around the fountain and gardens. Lulu would have been digging up the flower and Tucker would have made a bee line for the pond. Totally unrealistic! (KIDDING OF COURSE!)

The movie has gotten a lot of critical acclaim recently. It would be interesting to see the movie. I would have to see the movie to see the corgi scenes. Maybe the Queen's corgis are very well-behaved and more civil than others. That's my guess but I know that a lot of corgis would be jumping around instead.

No they're not, at least according to everything written about them and reported by palace insiders. I know of at least once the Queen appeared with her hand bandaged due to stitches she received after intervening in a scuffle between some of her corgis. The behavior of the Queen's corgis is a real factor in a bias or prejudice against the breed in England. From a number of corgi people who have seen the movie, they've all said the corgis were not protrayed realistically, and especially for the Royal corgis.Debbie Last edited by glencorgi; 11-09-2006 at 05:58 PM. |

I think not everyone likes the Queen so they don't like her pets too? There were a lot of blames on her and her son when Princess Diana passed away unfortunately. Either way, you can tell she loves her corgis. I don't know why corgis are portrayed as mean or aloof. They are the sweetest and warmest dogs out there too.
You are right, Debbie. Corgis are very active and energetic. |

When the Queen was in Edmonton this past spring, she met with a group of Corgi owners who had gathered to say hello. She told them that she was surprised at how well behaved the group was and that hers were always fighting and biting her and each other. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't inbreeding and obviously they are spoiled rotten!

I don't know where you people have got the idea from that the British Queen is unpopular. She is much loved and admired - especially in England but also throughout the Commonwealth and in Europe, and her Pem Corgis are usually pretty well behaved and are very fond of her. They are well cared for and the Queen and her kennel maid/s would only receive the best advice including any breeding or any additions to the family of Corgis. They buy in a puppy from time to time from some of the most reputable breeders. I think there is a lot of nonsense written about the Queen and maybe her Corgis in the same way as film stars are portrayed - and we know not to take much notice of that tripe. I am actually anti-royal and I believe that New Zealand should become a republic but I don't wish to see a person of the Queen's stature unfairly criticised. Anyone who has owned collectives of Pem Corgis for 32 years or so, will have experienced some problems over the years with behaviour in one manner or another.

I think you need to go back and read Jespah's note about the Queen's comments about her own corgis when she visited Edmonton last spring. Some of the owners of the corgis who visited with her are on other lists I am am on and they reported the same comments. Quote:

Saw the movie yesteday with Marshy and Mrs Marshy (parents of Dexter). I think most people went to see the Queen.
We went to see the corgis (!). There were at least 4 scenes when the corgis were around. In three of the scenes, the 5 of them ran in as a joyful troop...smiling widely and cheerfully (as only happy corgis can) , bunny butts trembling with great excitement....Two of them were constantly jumping on her (several times. They must have hidden some treats in the actress'/Queen's pockets....)....and the others were hanging around her with laughing faces. The dogs really looked like they were hers (the actress's)! Can't say the same for the black labs when they were with her. In the last scene where the Queen walked with Blair in her garden...the five were running about doing cute things when one (probably unrehearsed)...went in front of the bushes, lifted up his leg and pee-d. (Another followed him and smelt whatever he left behind there...)Haha. Read in the corgi pages that of the 5 corgis in the pack, one of them is a male. Must have been him doing what came naturally. In one scene (kitchen at Balmoral), the queen ordered the corgis: "OUT!" as she had to take an important call. The corgis ran out together - immediately. I dont think that in real life, the Queen's corgis are that well behaved. I was at a dog show in Birmingham (UK) in the late 1990s and I spoke with some corgi club people there. When I complimented them re their Queen's corgis, one of the ladies laughed. She said that her friend knows those corgis well (I think she said her friend either helps with the corgis at the palace or owns some corgis related to the Queen's corgis). She told me that the Queen's corgis are not as well cared for as they should be nor as well behaved. But I must say the movie was worth seeing....if only to view the corgis! |

There are many people prepared to rubbish the British Queen's Corgis no matter how they behaved or how well the Queen's staff care for them. It is all part of the great put down syndrome that falls on everyone who gets to be placed on a pedestal. Glencorgi is a good example of the set em up and knock em down brigade in latching onto 'true' Hollywood-type rumours as well as providing her own kind of ammunition (one of the Queen's Corgis mating with another breed of dog) as though it had any relevance.
There is no doubt that the Queen persisting with Pems for 50-odd years has been the most instrumental cause for the popularity of the breed worldwide. If they (successive Corgis of the Queen's) were generally poorly behaved, badly disciplined, unwelcoming, in-fighting, terribly raised and cared for, they would not have influenced Pem Corgi ownership like they have. Michael,
Why don't you muster up all your charm and persistance and try to get an interview with the Queen herself regarding her Corgis, their behavior, and how they reside at the palace. Tell her us "Go Corgi members" are dying to know and you need to get to the bottom of the truth. Then we could put "Hollywood type rumors" to rest. Surely the Queen would not like us to think that her Corgis are "beasties", and who better to write the truth than you.
