America's Cup
Don't know if any other Go Corgi member has been following the latest America's Cup contest but New Zealand is playing a major part in it.
The America's Cup is the oldest continuous international sports event and is the supreme yachting competition. Switzerland are the Cup holders thanks to several top NZ yachtsmen and currently both the USA and Team New Zealand have put up strong performances in the Challengers series for the right to compete against the Swiss on a one-on-one basis. Ironically, the USA entry has more New Zealanders involved than does Team NZ. There are 80-odd Kiwis involved in the USA entry compared with 70-odd involved with Team NZ. |

Personally I haven't heard much about the America's cup races. It used to be a" big thing" but now with all the technology involved it doesn't interest me that much. I know it has mostly always been for rich people to put out a boat, like Sir Thomas Lipton. Now it is another thing that is just so commercialized that it is not as interesting.to me and probably not for many Americans either.

The USA entry - which got knocked (beaten) out of the competition in the semi finals, had a $200 million commitment from its major American Billionaire sponsor who is a individual person (rather than a company or organisation).
I think a lot of Americans turned off from the America's Cup when the USA stopped being the cup holder. New Zealand's major sponsor is the Emirates Airline. The NZ Government has contributed $34 million to the current Team NZ entry. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 05-23-2007 at 05:32 PM. |

Chris Dickson, skipper etc of the USA entry, Oracle, is a controversial personality. He hasn't been first choice for a NZ entry for many years. He is a great sailor but not so much a team player. In turn, NZ could do with Russell Coutts. But we are in for the kill and I expect we will be the yacht to eventually give the Swiss a run for their money. Incidently, no entry that has put up the most money, has ever won the America's Cup - so Oracle was doomed from that point of view. The British have already started planning for the next America's Cup which hopefully will be contested in New Zealand. The Brits purchased one of the Swiss boats a few days ago.

Your possible coming to NZ for the Cup racing is what the NZ Government is banking on. That's why they put up so much money. We have also got the World Rugby Cup contest here for 2011 - and the NZ Govenrment is contributing much of the money that will rebuild the major stadium for the Rugby Cup.
