Cullen will arrive sometime in 2009/10.
Cullen is gaelic and Irish in origin and means good looking, handsome (and my next Corgi will surely be that). But the name to me comes from Christian Cullen who was born and raised fairly close to where I live and is New Zealand's greatest ever rugby full back and one of our most brilliant players ever.

What do you think of the name "Woody", Michael. I've always like that for a male Corgi. If Bubba hadn't already have been named, I was going to use that name.

I don't know if Cullen or Taylor for that matter, transcends into the USA from New Zealand. Perhaps they are English speaking international names. But Woody is pure Americanism. And I wouldn't use the name on my Corgi unless maybe he was American born or if I had an American breed such as a American Cocker Spaniel. To me Woody is better suited for a woods (forest) breed of dog such as a retrieving or hunting dog. Having said all this, if you called your Corgi Woody, I would have the utmost respect for the name and the dog.

English, American, Canadian Champion Beckrow Blue Cedar's call name was "Woody." He was UK bred, born and resident until he was imported to the US as an adult. He is behind many of the successful blue merle Cardigan lines in the US as well as Australia and many other countries.

One can call their dog (sometimes unfortunately) whatever they wish. I could call a dog Jacowitz but not be Polish or Slavic. Any amount of British, Canadians, Singaporeans etc can call their dogs Woody but I still say it is Americanism.

The name game is fun. We did do a few dogs with celtic names but if you go through my house, most of the dogs have human names-Claire, Fred, Phoebe, Marg, etc., well most do. Other then the collie called Pez-yes as in the candy-registered name is xxx Hit Da Button. Her brother is Turner--xxxPower Steering. I try to use a call name that is associated with their registered name.
The current cardigan litter is themed on a party/drinks line due to their parents names. So I have AlabammaSlamr who goes by Al. Or White Russian who goes by Russ. Shakn Not Stird is Martini or Marti.
Love doing names!!!

It's just an informal name for Woodrow, Michael. Sort of like most guys in their 40's or 50's who use to be called Bobby in high school, now prefer (for whatever the reason) to be called Bob or Robert. I can't imagine calling a dog Woodrow, however.

Love this thread - my two outlaws are called Chip & Dale after the chipmunks of course and their personalities equal the chipmunks. LOL

I have had the pleasure of seeing Christian Cullen playing several times, the first and the last were totally different experiences for him- the first was at the start of his career when the NZ team slaughtered my team Llanelli and he scored 4 tries- he was sublime that day.As you say, brilliant.
Unfortunately I also saw him playing for Munster, again against Llanelli in the quarter finals of the Heineken cup in March of this year when he was a shadow of his former self and such a shame to see a fine player now out of touch with the game.

The more I hear the name Woody the more it sounds quite cute. I still say it better suits a woods breed of dog. But then you could name a Corgi "bull-dozer' and get away with it!
I saw and wrote about Christian Cullen quite a lot and indeed after his terrible injury to his knee/leg he progressively became a shadow of his self. I saw him play local club rugby where several thousand turned up to watch. And it was a little pitiful. He was finished as a great player but still worth a lot of money overseas to muck around. Unfortunately he developed shoulder injuries in Europe that never came right.
And only yesterday, I learnt that he had actually just arrived back in the Kapiti Coast and had brought with him a Boxer-cross who as a stray dog had jumped a fence in Cullen's home in the UK a year or so ago, and Christian and the dog (named Austin) discovered each other. So I phoned the CEO of the NZ Kennel Club and said that Christian might be useful for good publicity for the national dog show (which includes agility) if he is invited on an official capacity. The national show in two weeks will be held locally.
