Taylor gets close to a real parrot - 11-29-2007, 12:07 AM

Looking after a baby, hand-reared and beautiful green (with one blue tail feather) Indian Ringneck parrot. The two month old parrot named Zinz ( after a famous New Zealand rugby player named Zinzan Brook), just loves being out of the cage and running around the floor and being handled and petted and hand fed. He has no fears whatever, is amazingly friendly and nothing seems to scare him. He loves flying into the kitchen sink and getting a warm bath with the tap as a waterfall. He stands his ground with Taylor and if he was with me more longer, would be taking a ride on Taylor's back. Taylor is jealous of the attention paid to the visitor. He just wants a fair go. The owner, a young guy, won't know for around 12 months or so if Zinz is a male or female - it depends on the ring. If there is a red ring appearing around his neck, then he is a guy and should be able to talk well otherwise Zinz will be a cute girl.
Might get one myself from the same breeder now that we have a large empty parrot's cage. Taylor will........ eventually........ be pleased.

That's really cool that Taylor got to meet a parrot. My boyfriend's parents have 3 parrots, a Blue and Gold Macaw, a Green Wing Macaw, and an African Grey. His younger brother has a Conure. They are such amazing creatures. The Blue and Gold and the African Grey talk like crazy and the Green Wing talks a little, but he is younger than the others. The Blue and Gold reminds me of how a dog would act sometimes. She lays on her back and likes her tummy rubbed and loves to be petted and scratched. What do you mean Zinz will only be able to talk if he is male though? I thought that both sexes could talk. I know the Blue and Gold is female and she talks up a storm.

With some parrots and parakeets types only the male can master talking human words and phrases, with all others both males and females cannot talk human or can be talkers but the male is predominantly the more likely to talk or the better and more talented talker. So most people who want a talking parrot or parakeet, go for the male for better odds.

If you would like a nice little story I recently wrote which includes the antics of a parrot who is in love with a dog. email me: mjromanos@hotmail.com

I had an Indian Ringneck briefly. It was given to me and it was never handled. Dumb. Her name was Nipper. Should have been Biter. She did learn to say Coffee, Nipper, Out and laughed. She enjoyed coming over to share my coffee with me. Didn't want her own cup, wanted to share mine. Beautiful bird. Do you know they are actually parakeets? I gave her to a santuary. She loved chicken but would always bite me first before taking her food. I spoiled her, cooked for her, let her but she was still a real brat. I tried for at least a year to tame her.

I had a yellow Indian Ringneck male for some years until he (Dandy, after dandelines which he loved) escaped from his cage which blew over in the wind and he was eaten by a cat as he had no fear of the Corgi I had (Hadlee) and therefore thought that cats would be friendly too. Dande made the local newspaper when we lost him for a week and I eventially found him a couple of kilometres down the road - his sharp parrot screech was a giveaway. Dande use to eat out of Hadlee's mouth and play chasing around the floor. I constructed a outside-the-cage perch and 'playground' for Dande. Dande could talk very clearly too, but the green Ringneck I am looking after is something quite special partly because the breeder has put in a lot of effort. The most expensive to buy of the Ringnecks in NZ are the all-blue colour.

mine was green and it was beautiful. I bet the blue is gorgeous. Eaten by a cat. Well that sucks!! Poor thing. I think you should get another. You have the cage, it would be a shame to waste it. And Taylor would enjoy it in time. As long as it was nice to Taylor.

I have an African Grey parrot who I had before we got Ruby, our Cardigan. In 5+ yrs they have established absolutely no relationship. The bird ignores Ruby and Ruby is intimidated by the bird. Ruby has tried on several occasions to smell the bird's anus but always hits the birds tail with her nose and that ends that.

The parrot yells a lot of the commands I give Ruby such as "sit" and says my "get out of here" with the same annoyed expression I use towards Ruby when I am mad at her.

Ruby is not allowed in the room we keep the bird and is a good girl regarding not entering the room when we are around. I have a sneaking suspicion that she has gone into the birds room behind our back as I have seen her coming from that direction with her tail sort of off to the right.

African Greys are great parrots to own and ours is very interactive.

Greys have to be surgically sexed to determine their sex and both sexes talk equally well as is the case with the 2nd best talking parrots-the Amazons.

A feel sorry for Ruby because Corgis don't really enjoy competition for affection etc from their owners/family. A parrot is the kind of competitor inside a house that a Corgi usually begrudges. Taylor is a lot happier now that the Green Ringneck parrot is gone and life returned to normal. But little does he know that me, my daughter and my oldest son all would like a hand-reared parrot just like Zinz. Just got to make sure Taylor gets extra attention and love when and if the time comes.
