King dog park - 12-08-2007, 09:47 PM

Christchurch city in New Zealand has just opened a new specific dog park and it must be among the best world-wide.

It's called Groynes Dog Park and it contains: several distinct areas. A large grassed playing field area for the dogs accessed by a fence chute. Two water areas for swimming etc with the water areas including the sides of the river banks proofed against mud. A small dog agility grassed park and another grassed area for all the others. A cross country area. A wonderful walk through bush. A memorial garden where people can buy a tree and bury their dog's ashes. The whole area is fully fenced and entry to the various sections are double gated. There are water taps and hoses to wash dogs before putting back in the car. Of course there are plenty of free litter bags available and plenty of rubbish bins. Finally there are lots of picnic tables and places to sit for people. Is this doggy heaven?

I wish we had something like that in our area. There isn't a dog park near me. The nearest is about 35 miles away, not easy for a let's good for some excercise quick trip. And, from what I hear, they aren't monitored to well against agressive dogs or bad owners. Lots of trouble with dogs fighting and owners not stopping their aggressive dogs.
I wish I had the money, there is a place right behind me that would be perfect for a little play park for dogs. It even has a building that can be used for like a coffee shop and little gift shops to cosign out or rent out. But, they want WAY to much for the place and it's not zoned for a business. Beside, I don't think my neighbors would tolerate the barking......too bad.

They have a simular dog park in my area. Molsen & Miller go once a week. Miller learned how to swim there. It is great to have open space for the dogs.

That does sound like a nice park! We're lucky enough to live in one of the most dog-friendly places in the US, with 12 off-leash parks, and close to 100 on-leash walking/hiking trails.

Here are just a few photos from a handful of the dog parks in my city:

That part of Texas sounds like a treasure for dogs and their owners. I live in Upper Hutt city which is a large recreational area for the Wellington region, and all the parks and reserves and walking/hiking areas here are free for dogs off-leash. No real need for a specific dog park here. Where I live there are four reserves within two minutes walking distance from my house.
