More Pet Peeves - 04-17-2008, 07:29 AM

Almost every year when I get the new license tags for Duchess or any other dog we have had in the past, I notice the sharp points on the metal. Some tags are in the shape of a star, which has five sharp points. A bell has two sharp ends. I usually file the points down so the animal is not so apt to get an injury from contact. Does anyone else run into this problem? I always mean to complain to the clerk but haven't done so yet. Every year the tag is one of three or more shapes alternating between bone. bell, star. The bone is okay but the other two are dangerous, especially when they are made with thin metal, press cut.

Hi Jane,
I thought I was the only one who filed down the sharp edges on that stupid bell!

Charlie has the bell. It never occurred to me that the points might be dangerous.

Your vet probably does have the decision on ordering a particular shape, so they may honor your request to order shapes without points.

Or you could get one of the pet pouches that the tags go in and the collar slips through the pouch. They make vinyl and leather ID pouches.

This is just one example site:

Charlie thanks for the pouch idea.
The town issues the license.
CAn you imagine all the people who put these tags on their dogs and never give it a second thought?
I worry about the points more with a small dog, like Duchess. than I did with the taller dogs I have owned before.

we have a bell, but ours aren't sharp, it's a rounded edge... and I didn't round it!
I wonder if our vet orders something different?

Our dog licenses used to be pretty bad. They were flimsy, difficult to read, and sometimes seemed to be painted. I don't remember them as being sharp and it never occurred to me to file them down. When a new person was elected to the treasurer's office, the quality improved dramatically. Maybe you could call your local office to express your concerns and ask if they could order a different type? I now have a lifetime license, which seems pretty substantial and is a rectangle with rounded edges. If your state offers it, it could be something else to look into.
