Animal Rights Article

The newsletter is up on the Utah Shetland Sheepdog site now. To see the article go to http://utahsheltie.org/Newsletters/2...ril%202008.pdf
It starts on page 8.

(And yes, corgis, mostly Pembrokes are my primary breed and my love. But we do have a sheltie and are involved in the sheltie club.)

This article is NOT to be posted or published elsewhere without my permission. And yes, I'll most likely give my permission if you ask.

Thank you for sharing your article with us Peggy. If PETA (and other AR groups) were to succeed in making domestic pets extinct, I would have very little joy in life.

I, like many other people can agree and support at least some of the opinions of Animal Rights groups. There is not always black amd white - often there are grey areas.

After I click on the site I get an ad of some one with sunglasses. When I click that off I have a blank page. What am I doing wrong? June

I agree with Michael, I can see their point in some things but I also think they are extreme. The horse that fractured both front ankles hasn't helped either. I read somewhere that the racehorses today mostly can all be traced back to one stud. Sad

Well I don't see much to agree with the ideals of the animal rights folks. For those of you agreeing with some of their points, are you sure you're not confusing animal "rights" with animal "welfare"? I'm sure most, if not all, of us on this forum are much more strongly in agreement with animal welfare.

No argument at all about animal welfare. As Martha Stewart would say, "that's a good thing." When animal welfare gets hijacked and animal rights agenda gets substituted for it, then we're on a dangerous slope.

Not sure. Did you ever get it to work? Is anyone else having a problem?

I can send it privately if you want.

I agree Chris. I'm for animal welfare too. Animal rights is working to do away with domestic animals. They do try to pass "feel good" laws to fool the average person as to their real goal. Sure it might sound good on the surface but look deeper, think about how it could be abused, expanded or hurt in the long run.

Animal welfare and animal rights are totally two different things.

If you all could elaborate some, I think it would be beneficial to some of our readers including myself.

This link directs you to a page giving a very brief overview of the difference between animal rights and animal welfare. It is sourced from the Animal Welfare Council:

Animal Welfare vs. Animal Rights

It offers only a broad, basic description of core differences, not a lot of the detail involved.

Ok, I'll give it a try.

Animal Welfare is not so much an orgainzed movement with an agenda like Animal Rights. Animal Welfare is a way of thought and care for animals. Humane treatment, good care, things like that.

Animal rights wants NO use of animals. Not for food, not as pets. Animal welfare is for responsible use of animals. Used for food but treated humanely, owned as pets and loved and cared for by owners.

These sites should help:
NAIA: Animal rights, animal welfare: which is it?
Animal Welfare vs. Animal Rights
Animal Welfare vs. Animal Rights
NC Responsible Animal Owners Alliance Animal Rights vs Animal Welfare

I don't know everyone on this forum so I can't make a blanket statement, but I feel pretty safe in saying almost all of us are for Animal Welfare. We want animals taken care of, loved, and treated humanely. We don't belive in doing away with domestic animals or just "admiring" them from afar. We want them in our lives and in our homes. We may choose to eat meat and allow others to choose if they want to or not. We may use other animal products such as eggs, milk, leather, etc. and again allow for others to choose. We want those animals raised and treated humanely throughout their lives no matter how long or short that may be. And most of us realize that there is more than one right way, correct way, proper way, humane way to care for animals.

Animal rights wants it done their way and only their way. No choices. No use of animals or their products at all.

I think that's safe. Animal rights people don't believe in owning Corgis (or any other pet). No wonder they're so unhappy and psycho...they should get a little bunny butt in their lives.

I wouldn't wish that on any dog, let alone our sweet corgis! LOL!

But yes, if they'd learn the unconditional love of animals maybe they'd have softer hearts.
